To start off I'm new to manga. I bought Blame vol. 1 a few days ago at Chapters and I have just finished reading it (or shall I say I finished gawking at the pretty pictures because there is barely any dialogue or plot). I am quite confused and frustrated with this manga because I do not know what the heck is going on and it barely explains anything. Does the plot progress along vol. 2? Do you suggest for me to continue with this manga?

I'm interested in sci-fi, horror and psychological thrillers.
Some manga that have come to my mind are Dead End, Dragon Head, Uzumaki and Battle Angel Alita. Are any of them worth a look?

Do you guys have any other recommendations for me? Thanks.

I don't think Blame is a good manga for new fans. But there is more dialog in volume 2, but I think it's more for people that have a good idea of the wide range of manga and have read several series already. Blame does get better as the volume continue.

As for recommendation:

Pick up Smuggler that's just came out. It's by Shohei Manabe, the same artist that did Dead End. Smuggler is like a mixture of The transporter meet Pulp Fiction. It definitely fit under the psychological thrillers catorgory. A lot of scene that make you say WTF.

Oh yeah, you have to pick up Monstertoo. It's definitely a "must have" if you like thriller, conspiries, serial killer and so on. It's definitely one of the biggest title to be release this year.

I wouldn't recommend Dead End, as it's mearly average, but Dragon Head and Altia are both keepers. If you want epic Sci-Fi, Akira is the way to go. A pivitol title in manga history and superb all around. Eden is another title that's similar to Akira and BLAME (not as good as Akira, much better than BLAME.)

Nah, I have to disagree with that. Dead End is definitely an above average title for me. A title I look foward to reading just as much as Eden or Akira. Might not be as good as some of the other title mention, but that really depend on what you're looking for. I still recommend at least giving the first 2 volume of the manga a try. The review over at AOD and IGN, I thought were dead on about why I feel this title offend get overlook by the "bigger" sci-fi thriller.

Quote:
Dead End isn't like typical sci-fi manga. It often has a slower, calmer pace. It's introspective without being too cerebral. At its essence, Dead End is a character drama that happens to involve some bizarre paranormal oddities. Where a manga like Akira is constantly demonstrating the macro-vision of the world, Dead End continually touches on the melancholy felt by each character. Having lost their memories, each seems to be waiting for that one moment to light a fire in their heart and get them motivated to live again.
