It's a real shame that the Otakon live show recording was forever lost, it was quite a panel. Pretty much all my favorite anime commenters were there.

regarding Brain Powered and Zac's comment about the characters piloting the mechs from the inside of a phallic-shaped cockpit strangely placed in the mechs crotches... I think that you're referring to Zone of the Enders.

I had every intention of attending the ANNCast at Otakon, but some late night scheduling snaffus with my friends prevented me from making it. I figured it'll be up here afterwards so I didn't sweat it. Next time, I will make a better effort.

The third episode of Sword Arts Online got over a million viewers making it 5 shows that can get really good ratings for Toonami right now (Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Soul Eater, and SAO).

Personally I watched two minutes and couldn't take anymore because of the sheer amount of death flags that got raised.

I have never truly blind bought an anime, the closest was probably Overman King Gainer, but I knew the plot, and had read parts of the manga before buying it.

I nearly bought Summer Wars before knowing anything about it except that it came highly recommended but while waiting for a Funimation sale, Netflix had sent it to me and after watching it I decided to buy something else.

Chibodee Crockett has a star on his chest, and his portrayed as pretty nice.

-Hey, I saw that episode of Sword Art Online too on Toonami that night (or, at least, the first half). The dub was fine, nothing really bad, and what I saw was okay. I could see why people got into it, but from a storytelling perspective it just came off as being a little dumb. Really, if you're stuck in an online game & death = real-world death, then why the hell would still want to engage in battles with monsters, especially in a dungeon that's a higher level than what you've tackled? Also, you're in an MMO yet you couldn't spot an obvious treasure chest trap, thereby resulting in the entire group (except for the lead) getting killed? Man, that was stupid of those characters.

-In terms of DBZ: Rock the Dragon, the sub-par video & audio quality was the be expected. I guess it was a little too silly to hope that FUNi might try to clean up the release, even if only a little. I wasn't expecting the insanity that was Media Blasters' release of Voltron (i.e. literally recreate the show using the remastered versions of the original Japanese shows), but I'm sure some cleaning could have been possible. Still, it does look like a cool release, packaging-wise.

-Odd how Zac said that Otakon's dealer's room line was "all day", because every time I went in (once per day) there was never any line. Also, Justin, I bought a BD set of Patlabor TV on Sunday, so maybe they simply forgot to re-stock it when you were there.

-I only asked about Otakon Vegas' sumo match because when it was announced during the closing ceremonies there was apparently nothing but dead silence from the audience. Personally, I'd gladly go to the sumo stuff myself (if I go to Otakon Vegas, that is), but hearing that it got an absolute no-reaction kind of made me wonder how well-received it would be.

Just to clear up what seems a minor misconception - Anime Mirai hasn't generated many titles of note because it's really not meant to.

It's not part of "Cool Japan" or meant to showcase original story concepts, it's a project the Japanese government funds to combat the talent drain from anime caused by outsourcing, by funding fully in-house animated projects that don't need to concern themselves with being marketable or commercially viable.

Little Witch Academia is an outlier in that they're pushing it a little more because it caught the eye of Western fans, I'm not sure the Anime Mirai releases are even sold conventionally in Japan otherwise.

I'm buying LWA1 and contributed to the Kickstarter for the second not because it's some groundbreaking show (it's not) but because it was an enjoyable, very well produced one-shot, and Studio Trigger are the kind of company who deserve to succeed and be supported. Anime is in a better state when companies like them exist, as opposed to low rent junk production lines like say, Gonzo or DEEN.

Okay, maybe the cockpit wasn't actually in the groin but they did enter the robots through the crotch.

And it was funny every time.

Any chance someone in the audience might have recorded the live anncast on their cell phones and a rough recording might be out there? Youtube's not showing anything but I keep checking.

Brain Powerd felt like half of a 26 episode show, told in 26 episodes.

Onii-sama e...'s pledges have really slowed down over the week. It was off to a great start with the megafans dumping in some money, far better than where the initial AnimeSols addition's pledges were at this time in their campaigns, but unless they do some more heavy advertising soon, it'll probably take the full three months to fund to completion.

I agree in wanting more Berserk, but only if they go full 2D. I'd rather no Berserk than more of what they've been producing, I already have the manga.

Screaming babies on a plane. *shudder* It makes me glad that all I have to put up with is three hours on Amtrak. (There were some service problems that prolonged the trip, but not by much and there aren't many screaming babies on the train. Even if there are: quiet car)

I noticed how sparse things were on Sunday. The Yōko Kanno concert was great, but that pretty well ate my day, so the handful of panels were out of the question and I couldn't see much point in attending the closing ceremonies. (Or the opening ones)

I agree at how awful the Baltimore Convention center is. This was my first Otakon (and convention) and I had a lot of fun, but the building is awful and ugly too. The layout is not at all intuitive inside or out, there are impediments to movement everywhere and the skybridge was terrible. (I didn't think much of the maps that they provided either) It's too bad that you won't be coming to Otakon next year, but I can't blame you for not wanting to put up with that flight again. (I would be a lot more reluctant to attend if it weren't rather painless for me to get there)

As Justin described that sandwich I had this image of him dying a guilt-wracked radical Vegan who dedicated the last years of his life to trying to atone for his unforgivable sins. I hadn't even known that pit beef really existed until a few months ago and I wanted to try it, but I couldn't think of an acceptable way to get out there. Before this year, I thought it was just something that John Waters made up for Pecker.

I'm really excited for the blu-ray of Lupin III ~The Woman Called Fujiko Mine~. I liked that show a lot and I think that it will be a more interesting experience to watch it knowing its themes better. (I'm also looking forward to listening to this fan audio commentary from Violence Jill and ABCBTom.) I suspect that I'll like dub better than Zac, but I understand his criticism and am apprehensive about Lupin's voice. I can't think of any Lupin voices that would fit the tone of the series, because its so starkly different from the sort of sound he's generally been cast for in the United States. If Sonny Strait is off, just imagine Tony Oliver. I'm more enthusiastic about Michelle Ruff, who I thought did well with the voice over for the trailer, and Richard Epcar, who it'll it feel strange not to hear playing Jigen, but whom I can imagine fits the show's much harsher Zenigata.

Was any of the dodgier animation cleaned up for the home video release?

F**k Infinite Ryvius. (And its silly, incongruous soundtrack)

Little known fact: Banning artistic anime is in fact the sole power constitutionally accorded to the Emperor of Japan.

Oh God yes, Dear Brother! (It's gotten about a quarter of the way, but seems to have stalled)

This Japan Times article has a brief paragraph on Otakon's demographics.

Roland Kelts wrote:
Roughly 35,000 fans of Japanese pop culture attended the event, according to Otakon’s director of press and publicity, Victor Albisharat. They skewed 53 percent female; 75 percent aged 19-34, and organizers say they keep getting younger.

I'm not sure how they got the gender and age figures (I don't remember if I ticked boxes for those on my registration or something or not), but they certainly fit with what I saw. It was different from my cynical expectations, in a good way.

I'm with you on the cosplayers blocking traffic. You should have been like ANN coming though Sunrise is going to spoil announcements by Funimation.

I think this who won the convention stuff is bleed over from places like Comic Con and E3. I don't think of anime conventions as competitive places unless it's the mascarade.

The titular Turn A Gundam had a cock-cockpit. And a mustache that curled up. Best design ever.

I don't know why Tomino felt he needed to top Anno with Brain Powered. He'd already done that decades before with his first two Gundam shows.

Sonny Strait is too geeky-sounding to be a good Lupin. He's trying his best in this new series, but I have a feeling the only reason he was cast is because he played him in the previous Lupin features Funimation dubbed (poorly). He doesn't have that grimy, snarky, perverted edge that he needs. Michelle Ruff's Fujiko has always been great and I was glad they got her back for this. That breathy, sexy voice and her great delivery really brings a believability to the role. Chris Sabat's Jigen is pretty bland, as usual. Bringing Richard Epcar on as Zenigata was weird, but it mostly worked. Mike McFarland was never right for Goemon. Josh Grelle's Oscar works rather well.

Great show, despite the middling English dub. I wish they could use this approach with more Lupin material, but they've already fallen back to the traditional, boring, safe route with the new TV specials and the upcoming movie with Conan.

I know you were talking hypothetically, but if you guys feel like visiting ACen someday, it'd be really cool to see you in the middle of the country. If nothing else, Chicago would offer an entirely new climate for Zac to hate.

I've read that Toonami didn't preview SOA more than a couple of early episodes before licensing it and people have been wondering how they are going to handle the later episodes

As I've said before, I wish Escaflowne would get a new good dub. I also think Crest of the Stars should, too.

I'm a very big science fiction and space opera fan, but while I liked Crest/Banner of the stars, it kind of left me a little cold. That show could get really boring at times, and it's not that I can't take something that's talky or exposition heavy and slow paced: I'm a super huge fan of Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

I swear that over the course of Banner I, there is literally what adds up to a full episode 's worth of time dedicated to the characters talking about that [expletive] cat that you have no reason to give a shit about at all.

The space battles were among the best I've ever seen in anything though, until the later series where they gave way to shitty CG. You know, I wish as a general statement that CG was never used in anime, or used in conjunction with drawn animation ever. I can't think of a single case where CG in anime didn't end up being all three of the following: out of place, terrible looking even when viewed out of its context, and displacing what would have been a really cool cut if it were drawn.

For completion's sake, I wish they got the as of now unlicensed Banner III, but that's probably not going to happen.
