Before this college fall semester began I had a full time job and was pretty good at managing my money. I purchased a laptop, car, and pay insurance and with the left over money that I had I put some into a savings account and the rest I blew on my gf and anime. Now I don't work and I try to just focus on school and I have a hard time saving up to purchase an anime title.

This got me wondering that how much money does the average anime fan spend on anime, manga, and other related products each month. Currently with school I only spend about $20 a month. I have only purchased the Elfen Lied DVDs and the Cowboy Bebop Remix DVDs. Because of a really tight budget I spend very little money on products. Before school I found myself spending ATLEAST $100 a month on anime. I have most of last years releases in my collection like RahXephon, s-CRY-ed, Samurai Deeper Kyo, Initial D, Ninja Scroll, Inuyasha Movies, Samurai X, X, Tsukihime, Gungrave, and many others. I have all the individual releases not the "economy/ perfect collections". Manga I have Battle Royale 1-13, s-CRY-ed 1-5, Gundam Seed Astray, FLCL, Cowboy Bebop 1-5. I have a lot of action figures including the 3 Evas, and a crap load of Gundams, and like 8 wallscrolls. I seriously blew a lot of anime and I don't regret it mainly because I was able to save money and I now have a laptop and a car that are payed for. Do some of you anime fans spend as much or more money than I used to on anime? My girlfriend even bought me one of those shirts that says that crack is cheaper than anime. She didn't mind because I would still buy her stuff. I bought "us" a $350 camera because she said she wanted one. A fool? Or a fool in love? Anyway as expensive as anime was, the gf was always more expensive but thats not the topic how much do you spend on anime?

I only thought of this because I start work again this coming Tuesday so I can't wait to pick up a lot of box sets I've missed because of school.

Oh geeze. I always have the ability to buy anime, but there are months where I wont go out and buy anything.

Like...these last couple of months, I have bought very little. A manga here and there. But back in july i spent about $150 in one day on multiple items.

So, in a month I would say, any where betwerrn $50-$150.

Which reminds me....I have to go out and do some shopping for my self before I get gifts for others.

Well there's your problem. Drop the girlfriend then you'll have money for the important stuff. You shouldn't be spending $350 dollars on your girl. Ask yourself if she would do the same for you.

Anyways, have you ever considered renting? There are a few good renting websites out there. But, you're in college and if you live in a dorm I'm not sure if they'll ship 'em to you--Just a suggestion.

There were a few months in my past when I spent about $60 dollars per said months. I had to break that habit because my bank account suddenly started shrinking--I hate it when that happens.

I slowed down my anime purchasing because my interest is waning. I pretty much stopped buying in June so I could start saving that money up for more important things that are coming up, i.e. grad. school applications, saving up to get there and paying, car, etc. I just spent in total for this year on grad. school applications, including GREs, a total of around $500 on tests, application fees, and releasing of test scores.

With this in mind, buying anime and manga is out of the question, however every now and then I do pick up one title, but that is only Ghost in the Shell 2nd GIG. And that's released every two or so months.

All of my income which is allowance and other ways I get money I usually have to divide up among my hobbies (Video games, novels, anime/manga, and music) but I still do get to spend a good amount on anime and manga I get what I usually want. Hell all of my collection has mainly sprung up this year as I started buying more anime and manga instead of my other hobbies.

Monthly...I would say I spend around 60 to 80 dollars. It all depends on whats out and not every anime are close to the same price. But I don't have a job either right now I'm living on just above a thousand dollars to my name. But I do certain jobs for people that get me extra cash if I need it. And I'll soon be in the Air Force and be making a steady pay. But the only time I go over that budget for anime is if I get extra cash or if something comes out that I really want...I still need to buy the robotech:protoculture edition that will also place me over my budget there.

As for your gf situation...has she ever bought anything. $350 dollars is alot and it wasn't even on an anniversary or birthday? I when I am date the most I spend on a girl is probably about at a max of $150 per month (excluding restraunts pay). However, that is me. You should determine wether if it's worth it to keep dating her and if you do well bite the bullet and pay for her or get an understanding with her that you don't have a job and you're on a tight budget. That's all I can really say about that.

I don't have too much money or time, but I make time if I want to see something. I get an anime dvd about every 3-4 months and a manga every month. Most of my budget goes to games.

Hmmnnn...., combined I'd have to say about $100 a month. But that's because I limit myself. There isn't enough money in my bank account to cover what I want, if i splurged.
So it's one anime a month (usually a box-set! Wink ) so that's, what, $40-50+ there, and I allow one manga a week (and I usually go and get them on the last Friday of the month) so that's about $40-50+ there too.
At first it was just grab what I saw/liked and that was fine until I saw the pie chart on my bank account program. Then it was Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked at just how much I was spending unheeded; and when it's more than your mortgage it's time to tie yourself up in a corner and give yourself a stern lecture----actually I didn't do that to myself, my kids did Embarassed . Now they pretty much watch me like a hawk.....(darn kids, being more mature than their dad Confused )
As for spending money on a "significant other", uh, I don't have one of those. Mine decided long ago to trade me in on another model so I have no worries in that department; except for child support----which is equal to a substantial amount of anime/manga; (getting off $350 for a one time camera purchase is lucky Wink )
As for schooling, mine is over and done with; but, with two kids in school (one in middle, one in high) there's a bunch of money tied up there as well. And while it's nothing as draining as college tuition, I do have that to look forward too in the not-so-distant future. Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop

Probably more than I should, though I live in denial by not calculating the exact amounts. I think I spent around $200 over a weekend at a recent convention, on 6 volumes of the Alice 19th manga, the Haibane Renmei box set (replacing a bootleg), the last 2 DVDs of Gunslinger Girl, and the first 2 Bebop Remix DVDs, along with miscellaneous merchandise. However, I've always held a job since I was 16, and continued to work during college, which I didn't have to pay very much for. Now I'm in graduate school, for the time being, and have a steady monthly paycheck. Combined with a low cost of living and extra money from off-the-record loan interest, I can funnel quite a bit toward anime. However, I am trying to slow things down on anime purchasing, limiting myself to "following" a few shows disc by disc and trying to avoid the temptation to buy cheap box sets that look appealing.

I spend around 40-80$ on anime each month, usually about 4 dvds. I found an anime store fairly close to me, and I rent some titles weekly, which helped cut down on the anime budget. I buy about 2-4 manga too. Last year it seemed like there were tons of titles, both anime and manga, coming out every week, but I don't really have that problem anymore. I think it's a slowdown for the entire DVD industry. There's just not that much good stuff coming out anymore. I pick up a lot of stuff at Half Price Books and and online through Ebay and even used stuff on Amazon.com which saves a lot of money too.

So my best advice would be to rent or if it's something you really want, buy it used. It's kinda hard to try out a new show when each dvd costs 20$. Even though I'm not a big fan of Newtype, at least they give you a dvd to check out new stuff (I wish all the shows on it were subtitled).

Now that I have the resources (I work part-time during the week) to buy it, I try to balance my spending so I'm not blowing my entire paycheck on anime and manga.

For anime I tend to spend about $100 a month; this is usually in the form of a box set. When there are no box sets available I might buy a single DVD or two. As for manga; it really depends on what's released. On average I'd say about $20-$60 a month.

I pretty much remain in a constant state of breaking even with college expenses, anime, and bills. As far as anime, I set aside about $100 a month of what I make (almost a 4th) for personal stuff and entertainment like that, non-anime DVDs, music and novels/manga, etc. I do spend more though if there's a boxset or collection I want.

Being done with college (Graduated) and having a decent job, and (Well depending on who you ask...Laughing) The blessing or curse of not having a girlfriend at the moment. I find that I can keep up with rent, utilties, bills, (Phone, Internet, Credit Cards, Cell phone) And still have enough to spend about $150 a month on anime. Now this isn't an absolute be all end all figure. It really depends on what's out there, what I can afford at whatever time in the month. Around convention time in July and September it's not unusal for me to splurge (With cash) around $600 dollars in one weekend on anime and anime related stuff (Manga, CD's, plushies, whatever.). On the other hand I will spend less during the holiday months, as I'm more concentrated on buying stuff for other people, and December seems to be a slow time for new titles to come out.

I currently spend $30 per month on Netflix, which gets me 20-30 DVD's each month if I'm quick about it (many of which are anime). I also rent from a local anime rental place called Dragon's Lair that costs $2.50-$3.50 per DVD rental. Most months I spend less than $30 for anime, but if I can't rent something I'll sometimes just go buy it and then resell it once I'm done with it. I rarely watch most anime more than once, unless it's very special to me or difficult to digest in a single viewing session. I go through phases though, and there have been months where I spent hundreds on various anime and then whole years where I never spent a single dime on anime. It all depends on what I'm up to and into.
