Hi all,
Did a search on this, but couldn't find what I wanted (I'm sure it's there somewhere, but I couldn't find it....) I'm trying to find some help comparing the 2 Akira dubs. Any thoughts on these? I think I've only seen the older one, and although not perfect, I thought it was relatively good (and I don't normally care for dubs either). What's this newer one like (from 2001)? And is it supposedly more accurate, etc? How does it change the viewing experience, etc. versus the old dub? Thanks |

Chances are the voice acting is better in the Animaze dub, since back in the 80s, dubs were done by random people who had no acting experience or talent (except Cam Clarke).
All I know about the old dub is that Cam Clarke played Kaneda. I would love to hear that, because I loved him as Liquid in the Metal Gear Solid games and as Max in Robotech. I still think JYB did better as Kaneda, though. |

From what I hear, the Animaze dub is a much more faithful translation.

I've heard many people complain about the newer dub being worse than the older one. I don't really care for Akira, but a couple of friends I knew said this.

I didn't even know about there being two different dubbs...kind of explains the why I felt a difference in the voices but just didn't pay attention to it when I watched Akira in the 90s' on sci-fi and the dvd I got around 2003. But I would figure the newer version would be better then the older one.. |

The recent dub is much more accurate, which corrects a couple of big miscues in the original English script. It also sounds like they actually got kids to voice the roles of Numbers 27-29.
HOWEVER, The new script isn't as smooth; the way things are worded is sometimes much more awkward. And the voice acting is generally quite a bit better in the original version. The ideal dub would have the original voice cast with the new script, but sadly, that's not going to happen.

Hell no. Cam Clarke/Jimmy Flinders may be a good voice actor, but he gave Kaneda a bad name on the Streamline dub. Johnny Yong Bosch did a much better job. |

I was easily sold on the new dub quite immediately... it was the only reason why I bothered checking back in on the thing even after seeing it under the old dub several times
*It also revised my opinion of the movie... I like it better now  *
I thought a lot of things just went together better in this newer one... Also, even the little things had a lot of work in it, which is what makes a good dub better mainly since it helps create a better atmosphere... like crowd noises and crap… a lot of work when into them, it was well-coordinated and scripted. (talking about the script, man, it was hilarious! Which is good and better reflects what the hell the movie was suppose to feel like…) I also liked that Kevin Seymour didn’t waste any of the dialogue on lackluster one-shot performances… I REALLY liked the Council meeting and how they pulled it off… it was BRILLIANT, doesn’t get any more badass than that. Anyway, I can’t seem to think of ANYTHING I liked better in the OLD DUB, acting from top to bottom on the new one was pretty sweet… If anything, I would like Joshua Seth to re-record ONE LINE… that’s about it Anyway, I thought that the new dub was by far a lot better, in acting, directing, scripting, etc. |

Wasn't the new dub only available on the Akira Special Edition? I only have the original release and have never seen the special edition.

Nah, it was on the REGULAR US R1 DVDs...

I was wondering whether or not I have the new dub or the original. I own the Geneon produced signature siries DVD and I purchased it last summer. And if I have the new dub how can I find the original and vise versa?

Oh okay, the one on the GENEON DVD is the NEW ANIMAZE dub
The old one... well, it's hard to find unless you can import the AUSTRALIAN DVD which has both dubs... I wouldn't know any other means as to how to obtain the old dub other than that |

If that's the only way to get it then I'm going to be looking for it...so I can make my own comparision. Hopefully won't cost that much but I doubt it. |
