i found out i bought a few bootlegs but what's bad about them the animation is the same the subtitels on my dvd are perfect no mistakes or anything so what's bad about them.

None of the money that you used to purchase the bootlegs goes to the creators who made the show in the first place for you to enjoy.

You should care. Without the creators getting money then they wouldn't be able to make what you're enjoying. Would you like to not get paid for what you do in order to support yourself?

It ruins the shows down the line, you essentially paid someone to steal something for you. If they don't make money then they cut back on future productions, the effects are cumulative. It's easy to ignore something that's wrong now because it doesn't effect you immediately, but if it accumulates and the effects are felt down the road I bet you'll be there with everyone else whining about it despite the fact you contributed to the cause.

But there's still money to be made from TV showings, ancillary products, plus the domestic DVD market. And even if those didn't exist, would it be so bad for them to make art for art's sake?
In any case, hikaru, decide on the morality of bootlegs youself, and let others do the same. |

Generally speaking, bootlegs usually DO have lower quality video and subs ranging from bad but readable, to "these subs are hurting my brain." I remember back before I knew anything about anime, I bought a boot of You're Under Arrest. I knew something was wrong when most of the sentences made little to no sense. I really knew something was up when, after a few eps, all of the characters names changed to very odd names, so I didn't know who was talking about who anymore. You will run into the occasional decent quality sub, or the dreaded R1 rip. Basically, as has been said, none of the money you pay for the fansub goes to any of the creators of the work. (Yes, when you buy R1 or whatever region you live, money does go back to the companies and people involved in Japan) It would be like me stealing a loaf of bread and then selling it to you. I basically make pure profit, save for whatever pitance of money it might have cost me to transport the bread to you. |

I have the Z Gundam boxset. A friend of mine has a bootlegged collection (granted, he got it long before Bandai licensed the series, but still...) and the subtitles on his discs are absolutely astounding. There's a scene in which Kamille stands up and "Shit!" appears in the subtitles (no one's even speaking).
 Then there's a scene in which Katz says something out of line and the subtitles for Capt. Henken's response say "Shut up, Gripps." Then there's the scenes in which the subtitles become strings of gibberish, like in a scene where Haman is talking and the subtitles read "We liberate Zhhhanagan and beat the Augyehren for the moblesa patui."

It is indeed rare to come across a perfect quality R1 rip. The downside is...- you like good animation, right? And you wouldn't want your anime to have a scene looking like it was doodled in a couple of minutes and used a billion times over. Well, you'll end up with Inu-Yasha/Pokemon quality animation for most of your shows if you never support the rightful creators. Animation is expensive. Although anime is cheaper to produce, the studios also make much less. I don't know if you've seen any show with really great animation, such as the R.O.D. OVA, FF: Advent Children, or Cowboy Bebop, but those shows cost money to make. Although pirating cannot be stopped, contributing to it doesn't help. Sort of like "well all of these people steal, so it's okay if I just swipe something just this once." I should think not. I happen to draw a bit myself, and I certainly wouldn't want people photocopying my work and selling it without giving profit back to me. The quality of bootleg you got is quite rare, so I wouldn't plan on living on it.
And hikaru393...please be careful with your grammar and spelling, its reminding me of a bootleg's subtitles.

Yeah i've had similar experiences with bad subbing by bootleggers. My friend lent me his complete set of Shadow Skill TV and I already knew it was bootlegged. Anyways during the first 4 episodes the subbing was so horrible but it stopped after the first disc. The subbing was pretty descent until the last disc where it was completely messed up.

My favorite bootleg subtitle of all time. Someone I know bought a bootleg copy of the G Gundam, and I could not stop laughing when the "Shuffle Alliance" was always referred to as the "Sufaru Delibidation."

It's like paying for stolen goods. If someone want to sell you a stolen car, would you buy it?
And the quality of bootleg are never on par with official release. Bootleggers use lower video and audio bitrate to put more episode onto a disc. You might not see the differences if you're running just the bootleg, but run both show side by and side. But the biggest reason of all is supporting the anime community and people behind it. Money funded from bootlegs will fund other illegal activities such as child porn dvd, prositution, drug trade. Can you really consider yourself an anime fan if you're just stealing anime? |

Well, like everyone else is saying the money you spend on non-bootlegged material goes to the creators/companies. If they don't get that money you can forget any more good shows you want to be made because they will no longer have enough money to make them.
Yes they still make money off of all those but they still lose money they can use. Anime takes alot of money to make you need to realise this steroid. For example steam boy took 20.2 million dollars to make. You're art for art's sake is a bull crap statement not when it involves that kind of money. 20.2 million dollars isnt something that should be jsut said what the hell its art they should just enjoy making us great entertainment.If everyone bootlegged that movie I can almost guaranteed there won't be another. |
