Is there an up to date list of mangas that are out of print?
I want to know so I am careful not to start a series with an out of print manga or if I see one in the store I can quickly buy it. Also if anyone out there know any out of print hayate no gotoku manga would you be so kind as to tell me. |

Tokyopop used to keep an archive of stuff on their website, with press releases specifically for OOP books. http://www.tokyopop.com/corporate/biz_dev/447 Like this one.
Though with them closing, consider anything Tokyopop Out of Print- once it's gone, it's gone. Just like any of CMX's titles [if you want Emma, get it now now now!]. Though basically, if it's not listed on http://www.rightstuf.com then it's probably OOP. I'd suggest getting a copy of Jason Thompson's Manga Guide http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/Hka6ZYw7IL0uA1Y-mm/browse/item/71686/4/0/0 which includes reviews of every japanese manga released at the time it was published. It can help you know what to watch for in comic back issue bins, used book stores and online. Keep in mind too, that while some pubs have closed, others like VIZ, Seven Seas and Vertical are doign fine, and Del Rey's change to Kodansha Comics is going well too. And while many books go OOP, perenials keep getting reprinted- -Vertical often reprints titles where sales merit, and have done new editions of some of the Tezuka titles, such as the 2 vol. ed of Apollo's Song after the Hardcover omnibus and the paperback edition of MW. -VIZ is reissuing their bestsellers under their VIZBIG [InuYasha, Fushigi Yugi, Vagabond] line and their new 3-in-1 releases that kicked off awhile back with One Piece, and now include Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist, Kekkashi, and a new edition of X/1999 from CLAMP - Dark Horse has done new editions of Oh My Goddess, and has most of CLAMP's Tokyopop titles back into print with new, elaborate reissues like the CLOVER omnibus, Rayearth omnibi, and the upcoming Angelic Layer and Tokyo Babylon reissues among others. -Seven Seas generally does omnibuses for their releases, often their OEL titles that reach 2-3 vols, and their manga. It's a nice way to keep things in print. -Kodansha is doing new editions of Sailor Moon, Love Hina and Tokyo Mew Mew, as well as an omnibus edition of earlier Negima volumes. animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=157584 Thsi thread has some handy tips on how to find harder to find titles. |

For the pessimist in all of us, I tend to presume that all series have the potential to become OOP or even cancelled at random points. Except for ungodly popular series like Naruto and One Piece. But they have to be ungodly popular for this to apply. Popular enough for casual fans to have heard of it and non anime fans to have heard the name too. I also tend to presume that Viz will cancel anything over 25 volumes at some point in the early 20s or late teens.
Sometimes they will simply print one run and if you missed it go "your problem" and no matter how fans call for it *cough*Basara*cough*, they still won't do another print run or bring it back. They all have unique problems that are becoming easily identifiable: Dark Horse-publishes the next volume if the last one sold enough. Therefore, popular series like Gantz and Berserk, are damn near guaranteed to get more volumes while some stuff stops getting new volumes, usually around 3 for whatever reason. Viz-cancels stuff that isn't selling well enough around volume 20 or so. This mostly applies to things that are longer than 20 volumes, the longer the more likely. Anything under 20 volumes that isn't a Shonen Jump title (though Gintama found that shield doesn't always work) tends to get published in full, thankfully. I should mention it needs to be significantly over 20, like over 30 really shoots it in the foot. DelRey-I'm fairly certain that they just threw darts at a board. It is unclear if Kodansha will continue this tradition or not, hopefully they will not. The following companies are defunct, consider everything they made OOP unless it has been since rescued: Tokyopop, CMX, Go Comi umm, those are the most major recent ones. Any company I haven't mention, I dunno about how to predict stuff that'll go OOP from them. |

Sean Gaffney has a list of all of the Tokyopop titles that won't be finished, which I think is something to consider. There's a big difference between "It went out of print after it finished its run." and "It's just plain out of print. Hope you didn't want to read the rest!"
But yeah, as of last Friday, just consider all Tokyopop titles OOP. |
