Not really a surprise. I suppose it's only a matter of time until we hear about Magi or Blast of Tempest on Neon Alley.

Although I have to got to wonder how much anime fans actually know or use Neon Alley because when I was at the Aniplex panel at Anime Boston, very few people indicated that they use Neon Alley.

Going off of it's Facebook page a lot of people know about it, and since Viz stated their pretty happy with how it's doing and more stuff keeps getting added I guess the userbase is high enough.

I'm really curious why they wasted time "announcing" this when this information was confirmed way back at Anime Central a couple of weeks ago. I guess since they didn't do a formal announcement they figured they could get away with it...*sigh* Well hopefully they don't wait long to give us the cast list at least

^ Sentai wants to REALLY test the waters with this movie before committing to dubbing (or distributing) more of the series. Though I'm not sure if Chris Patton would continue to voice Gintoki since he's temporarily moving to DC to be with his significant other before permanently moving with him to LA.

There are a few people I know in real life who have Neon Alley. That's usually an indicator for me for how popular or "mainstream" something is.

Sentai said they were in discussions for more GinTama at Anime Boston. So we could see more of it released. Whether or not they will be dubbed is hard to say.

I'm surprised that Neon Alley seems to be getting more popular. A streaming program with variable picture quality, the inability to pause, commercials, inability to choose what to watch when, inability to choose the language... You see where I am going with this. Also I heard mostly negative things about K; I'm kinda surprised that they chose this.

Who's gonna dub for Viz Media?

WILL IT BE.......
The usual suspect - Studiopolis?

The recent newcomer for Viz Media - NYAV Post?

The recently most-used studio Bang Zoom Entertainment?

Or the Dark Horse known as Ocean Studios?

^ The movie has already been dubbed by Sentai.

If it's the TV series you're talking about, it's SENTAI who's dealing with the Gintama anime. If they dub it (with or without Chris Patton), it's pretty much guaranteed to be Seraphim Digital dubbing it, just like for the movie.

If it's K you're talking about, it'll probably be Bang Zoom, who is Viz's "go-to" studio for shorter series (Vampire Knight, Accel World, Nura). Studiopolis mostly works on their longer shows (Bleach, Naruto, Zatch Bell!, Blue Dragon), as well as Tiger & Bunny. But if Bang Zoom is too busy to produce work efficiently, NYAV seems the most likely. But with Bang Zoom wrapping up with on Accel World, Sword Art Online, and Blue Exorcist, that doesn't seem as likely. They were working on ALL of those in addition to other stuff while Zetman was being dubbed. Berserk was dubbed at NYAV because that was the studio who dubbed the TV show, and Viz wanted the original VAs back.

The picture quality and inability to watch things at your leisure is an issue(though the latter is supposedly being worked on) but the commericals are entirely otaku friendly and from what I've seen hardly anyone has a real problem with them since its mostly just trailers for other anime. For the language thing it was said right off the bat that the service is targeted towards people who want dubs and is more or less Viz's way of promoting their dubs before putting out their actual physical releases. Having JP audio tracks available on the service would be rather pointless, especially since pretty much all their shows are available on Viz Anime subbed, free of charge and I doubt people would react well to being suddenly expected to pay for them.

As for why they chose K, a lot of people watched Viz's simulcast. Simple as that. Some people hated it, but I also saw a lot who liked it(I found it to be decent myself) so I think it balances out enough for them to take the risk.

Personally I only really subscribe to the service because it's actually motivating Viz to do stuff with the anime they pick up, but for the audience the service is probably targeting (my guess is the Toonami-esque crowd) I don't think it's that hard to see where some of the appeal lies.

Let the new round of Guess The Cast begin! I'll get the proverbial ball rolling, shall I? (btw, excellent job pondering the dub studios already.)

Either Steven Jay Blum or Crispin Freeman as Mikoto Suoh, perhaps? I'm unfamiliar with many other male VAs whose tenor could be deep/bass enough, but if someone knows an English VA whom they think fits better I'd love to hear it.

How could it be? It's not the type of show that just any American could watch and understand. There are to many references to other anime, video games, Japanese history, and general Japanese pop culture. In order to make the show watchable in America to anyone who isn't a hardcore anime fan it would require heavy re-writing and localization of the script and lots of cultural notes on screen. Now if it was funimation doing it I would feel a little better because they in general do a good fairly job with localizations, but Sentai? I don't have high hopes based off of their past work.
