What does non-otaku people do that annoys you?
For me, 1. saying 'japanese cartoon' instead of 'anime'. though i don't really know why it pisses me off...anybody can explain? 2. pointing to my favourite character and saying that he is a girl... (I was close to strangling that person) can't think of anything else at the moment... |

Beats me. I don't use the word "anime" that much 'cause I think it's pretty silly that, out of all the aniamtion made throughout the world, only Japanese animation has its own word. |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otaku You know what annoys? People who say "animes." THAT IS NOT A WORD. The plural of "anime" is "anime," just like the plural of "deer" is "deer." GEEZ!
Maybe it has its own word because it's better than all the other animation. And who cares; it has a word, USE IT. People who say "Japanese cartoons" are obviously not anime fans. And by your logic, cars shouldn't have different names because they're all just automobiles? Hey, maybe I should call my 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage "the car that Mitsubishi made in the year 2000" because it's silly for it to have its own name. |

I don't get what you're saying, how usefull is such a word if it limits itself to a core public. If you say "Anime" there's the possibility of people not understanding what you're saying, however, Japanese animation is something everyone understand. Isn't it more logical to use the latter then? It's basically the same thing as every other animation, it's just made in Japan as a difference. And seriously, don't come spouting that "It's better than all the other animation" crap, that's just not true. |

Stop whining and get over it.
...Seriously, how can something so small and unimportant tick you off? Someone else's vocabulary doesn't effect you, so don't complain about it. Don't be such a stick in the mud. Fyi this thread is spammity-licious and useless.
Haha, not quite. |

Suggest that "otaku" is a synonym for "anime fan." |

You know what really pisses me off when people talk about anime its that they can only think of pokemon and dragon ball z. When they talk about pokemon they think anime is only about catching weird freaky animals and using them to battle. When they refer anime to dragon ball z they only say how its just stupid fights where the fighters die and come back to only fight and make it sound like they're constipated while powering up. I feel like kicking the person's ass because they are so closed minded but hey thats their opinion. It just really ticks me off that non-otakus only think of anime as dragon ball z and pokemon and don't realize there are quality titles out there that aren't just about monsters and constipated fighters that can come back alive.
Thats the general thing that ticks me off but another thing that really ticks me off is pretending that they can talk japanese and only make it sound like its some shitty language. I can't stand people who tarnish a country's language or other cultural aspects. So then when people come up to me and make fun of anime then i'll just remind them that america was the original creators of motion picture and that if you make fun of japanase motion pictures you're making fun of american motion pictures too baka! |

Hmm...a lot a things annoy me these days when it comes to anime fans in general.
I get annoyed with fans who mix Japanese words when speaking English. Squeeling KAWAIIIIII!!!! or SUGOIII!! anytime you think something is cute or awesome is not cool. And using -chan or -san or -sama after someone's name...since more often than not it's used incorrectly. Anime fans who like to refer to themselves as 'otaku' and think it's something good. It's not. It's a very very negative label to have in Japan. If you have ever seen 'Otaku no Video' you would understand this. |

I think the only thing that "new-otaku" do and can annoy me is when they think they have more right than others to talk about something or when they create topics like this one.
If anyone gets annoyed for other person's vocabulary, just ignore them and the problem is over. ps: English is my second language, sorry for errors. |

I sometimes use the "Japanese Cartoon" thing to better explain it and to try to soften it a little bit, since liking anime is strongly associated with being a nerd--not that this softening helps. I don't really care for the term "Japanimation," unless it's in episode 17 of Excel Saga. And yes, while "otaku" is a badge of pride/term of endearment among fans outside Japan, it's a bad state to be in in Japan. It basically means shut-in or fanatic, someone who is obsessed with some hobby, anime or not, that involves staying indoors and not having contact with the outside world. It could be anime, video games, H-games, computers, military stuff, models, and probably other things that I'm missing. "Taku" is a way of saying "house," and that's where this association comes from.

So, it just comes from prejudice, then? What a great reason not to use it. Thanks for backing me up.
Oh no, I'm not an anime fan. Boo hoo.
Lame, lame, lame analogy. Every single car has its own name, as given to them by the manufacturers. Now, imagine if one car was called the "Vauxhall Nova", and all the other cars in the world had names like "the car that Mitsubishi made in the year 2000" or "the car that Purgeot made in 1998". That's more like the situation with anime and foreign animation. |

Why don't you just call your 2000 Mitsubisihi Mirage your car? It might save you some effort you know. |

the fandoms has more stuff that drives me up a wall alot
more then someone calling anime japanese cartoons. like the already mentioned inserting japanese words into every day conversation, the -kun -chan -san hell I got a friend who was like kept trying to call me sempai once he found out I had more college credits then he did. I promtly straightned him out on that "I am not japanese, you are not japanese this isnt japan Dont call me that or im gonna smack you abside the head" so its not just the Highschool or younger kids that do it. Ah yes then theres the whole Yaoi when they really mean Shonen ai storyies such as Gravitation and not the porn that is Level C of course in Japan the term is becomeing more dated with Homosexual anime and manga simply being called Boys Love as a broad term for Yaoi and Shonen Ai. I think that term fits better. The mindless CN/funimation/4kids/whatever company bashing becouse its edited and or dubbed before being put on tv.Change the channel if you dont like it gah its not that hard no ones holding a gun to your head and forcing you to watch it. Same with the Sub Vs dub dont like dubs dont watch dubs thats why we have the wonderfull language and subtitle menu on dvds. and with about 95% of the dvds being billengual the aurgument is dead. |
