Pretty cheap but I wonder what kind of new benefits there are. I'm not a big fan of YT though.

what YouTube becomes another monthly subscription since Netflix, Crackle, Crunchyroll, hulu plus and vudu as Youtube on Demand c'mon.
It's not PPV and not Cable.

Well, it seems that my time on YouTube is almost coming to an end. There's simply no way that I'm going to be owing YouTube money just to subscribe to a Channel. Hence, I've decided to forgo all of the Channels that I subscribed to.

As long as everything else remains totally free, launch whatever BS you see fit.

I don't think you read the article carefully.

I didn't see anime being said on there. Also there are movies on Youtube for rent purchase. I doubt anime will be part of this. I don't think my anime and K-pop program will be affected by this.

This subscription is not for all of Youtube. It's more for original content and live programming like sports that otherwise wouldn't be available on TV. Youtube's revenue is pretty much 100% from ads, so they're thinking of broadening their income sources and not put everything in one basket. They can do like the Crunchyroll model where subscribers get to see the media first, then make the media available for everyone else a week later.

If this works, and that's a big if, it could be a good thing. Of course, most of the content is going to be stuff that's far too niche even for cable, but anything that gets us even infinitesimally closer to a la carte cable channels gets my seal of approval.

There are some things that need to be clarified:

YouTube's revenue is pretty much entirely from ads. This will not change that much.
YouTube will not start charging people to subscribe to already existing user-made "channels" (that is, the accounts of other regular users who post videos).
YouTube's plan is probably to partner up with certain high-profile companies and/or content creators to create "premium" content, essentially in the same vein as Hulu Plus and other such services, except on a per-channel basis (for example, instead of subscribing to an entire service, which covers several networks and content providers, you could subscribe to just one network's content for substantially less).
The rest of YouTube will not be affected by this.

Everyone can stop having a panic attack now.

True, as long as they don't make all anime and my K-pop programs charge money, I'm fine with it. I'm curious what kind of premium channel do they have, it said movies and niche sports (what the hell is niche sports?)? Will there be other premium channel for other thing else.

Youtube isn't going to "make" anyone charge anyone anything.
Presuming all the anime and K-pop programs you watch are legal*
then the only people who will decide if you have to pay for those
anime and K-pop programs are the people who uploaded them
and hold the copyright to them. In other words uploaders can
charge money now for their own original content.

* I don't care if you watch legal or illegal programs.
It should however be clear that an illegal show couldn't
legally speaking charge you for a show it does not own
the copyright to. Of course this is just common sense.

Though this will likely mean that they will increase
the copyright take downs since it could be seen
as potential competition.

When youtube stops using US community standards for censorship then premium content will become more viable.

But they're mainly from the U.S. business-wise. That's where they have the most exposure, so that's where they mainly have to protect themselves. Premium channel HBO has to abide mainly by U.S. rules as well.

Makes me wonder if "niche sports" is referring to competitive gaming/esports as that it pretty much the only thing I can think of where Youtube could capitalize on such a niche market.

Maybe curling? Sumo? Cricket? Squash? Pole dancing?
