So far there are about 32 people dead and the number is expected to rise drastically. I really hope that doesn't happen though.

Minori Chihara is due to perform in Tokyo tomorrow and I gather from Shigeru Saitou's Twitter feed that there's some doubt.

I know ANN have to think in terms of anime news, but my heart and mind is going out to everyone in Japan suffering from this earthquake and tsunami right now.
Delays in anime events really don't measure up to the scale of destruction that's unfolding on the news channels like NHK and the twitter feeds. Really glad and greatful so many people are OK over there; take your time and get your lives sorted out first guys, anime can wait! |

Watching the news this morning and seeing a wave of water and debris (including buildings and small ships) being swept over the landscape - and people trying desperately to escape in their cars as the water moved in was absolutely terrifying.
The people in Japan have more to worry about right now, best wishes to them all. |

My cousin and his family are fine. So far, from my own Twitter feeds, no-one has broken anything more serious than shelves and anime figures and the following in Japan have all checked in:

It's already higher than that now, though at the moment I'd say it's a minimal number compared to other earthquake disasters. At least they were able to regain control over their nuclear facilities, it would've been even worse if they couldn't have cooled down one of the reactors that went off. |

Reading the online news this morning I am shocked at the amount of damage caused, between the earthquake, and maybe more so the tsunami. Yes, please, add my prayers and thoughts to everyone affected over there.

I feel terrible. Mainly because I keep thinking of Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 when I hear of this. I mean, it's terrible what happened, but I can't get that damn anime out of my head now that I'm hearing this. I feel like a bastard.
I truly hope the people over there recover from this. |

Human life is far more important than our weekly shows. Any news on whether they're accepting relief donations? You guys at ANN are the first place I went to when I saw the news on my TV, I knew you guys would be all over this story. Wouldn't it be crazy if, when Japan starts the recovery process, if anime fans around the world pitched in to help? Kinda like a Genki Dama effect! "Give me a little of your power, otaku of the world!"
Update: I heard from friends that Tokyo Disney Sea has received some damage. I don't know if we're allowed to post links to TwitPic on here, so I'll wait to hear before I post anything. Last edited by vashthekaizoku on Fri Mar 11, 2011 9:10 am; edited 1 time in total |

Wow. I don't think I have the words to express the concern I have for the well being of all people in Japan. This concern really goes beyond my love of anime, manga, and various media fandoms. Yes, I am concerned as to how this has effective all creative works of any kind, including artists, production studios, seiyuu, live action actors, Musical artists, stage actors, and a general concern for all industry and their families.
Thanks to all who are checking in with blog updates! |

I just saw on TV that the Earthquake triggered a tsunami. So the damage will be quite severe. It apparently happened off the coast of Sendai. The tsunami is expected to affect Hawaii as well.
Based upon 911, I expect their broadcasts will be disrupted for about a month. We'll probably even see US TV interrupted for news broadcasts for the next week, although we're in a time of heavy reruns so it won't affect US production. Regular shows like Naruto can easily be put off for a while but it could affect the length of the shorter run shows this season and may affect the spring season as well. Many shows may wind up getting shorter seasons than planned. But it's sure to have some effect. Even if the shows are produced, it's likely that if they're not getting aired in Japan that they may not get streamed online. But it's just TV and I can do without new anime for a while if necessary. |

Doesn't seem as bad as Kobe so far, it seems. At least the industry is relatively unharmed I guess.
Time to rewatch Tokyo Magnitude I think.. |
