Fairy Tail author Mashima Hirô just announced on 00:00 April 16th 2013 (Japan Time) that an anime adaptation of the Fairy Tail x Rave (Rave Master) crossover was to be sold as a Limited Edition bonus for the 39th volume of Fairy Tail. There would also be some characters set to appear who didn't appear in the crossover such as Musica and Let.

So, was this the "Big news" he was hinting at when the FT anime was canned?

I don't think so. He also mentioned before posting that on his twitter, that it wasn't the BIG news everyone was waiting for. Although he did just mention he'd be the one supervising the development of this crossover anime adaptation.
