On various forums that I visit daily, I see that it has become a natural everyday thing to bash and put down DBZ. But it is not really just DBZ, it is also Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and now I'm starting to see some Naruto bashing too.
Most people who have seen such anime as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Full Metal Alchemist and other anime in which the story is very detailed and the characters are well developed have reason to not get into such shows because sometimes their stories can be quite contrived and recycled but I think it is necessary to understand that these are like "Gateway Anime" as I like to call them.
They are anime that are made to lead people into the whole world of japanese animation. To show them how different the stories are and how on various levels they differ from Western animation.
But most people fail to understand this and bash them especially by comparing them to anime that is meant to have deep stories as these were obviously more tailored to entertain then to captivate.
But yes when compared to Yu Yu Hakusho where the characters are more detailed and the stories are very interesting, I would watch it over DBZ, but that is only because I know the wide range of anime that is out there.
I understand it is just people expressing their opinions but this kind of thing is common knowledge to even moderate anime fans. I just don't see why it is obvious to state this in every post they make.

Sorry to spout on, but this is just something that has been on my mind for awhile, and I hope that I can get some honest replies about other peoples opinions on this, especially if they conflict with my own.

The way I see it, DBZ bashing came about in response to some particularly rabid DBZ fans that decreed their beloved show to be the ultimate anime. Now, this was utter nonsense. No one anime is the best, but the fans in question believed otherwise. So what? This is common among fans of anything. But there was another factor. DBZ was huge. There were so many DBZ fans, that many other anime fans basically paniced. Many of these reactionaries had enjoyed DBZ, but were worried that the anime community would become consumed by this rabid fandom. They unfortunately chose a very aggressive strategy in which they began bashing DBZ left and right.

Now, as we all know, DBZ's popularity has greatly decreased, replaced by shows like Naruto. So now the remaining DBZ fans are at the mercy of the reactionaries, who are still thriving.

This is the life cycle of all things popular. Replace the references to anime with anything else. Music, movies, novels, videogames. It all fits. This is my view of things.

And for the record, I was one of the reactionaries. I've moved passed it though.

Don't you mean beer? Beer is the gateway drug not weed.

I see a lot more Pokémon bashing than DB* 'bashing'. Although I don't personally 'bash' it, I can understand people doing so because my personal opinion is that I can't stand it. The forums on the official FUNimation website have lots of adoring fans if you're looking for some. Way too many of them for my taste to be honest.

One word: Elitism
Additional word: Insecurity

And a gateway drug can be any of the softer drugs out there that leads to the use of harder drugs. The most popular of such is marijuana, as that is the one associated with the common myth of someone who uses harder and harder drugs. Alcohol isn't considered similar to that. After all, it's a legal drug, so it can't be that bad...

But just to dig into the words that were used in the original post, those series mentioned where not "made" to get people into anime. More correctly, they were made in order to make money. The series can be used to get others hooked onto anime, though, and in fact DragonBall Z is one of the shows responsible for the anime boom of the late 90's and likely responsible for why a number of the frequenters of this site are here today.

Everyone -- okay, not everyone -- used to like DBZ. I admit that it's a good show. It influenced a lot of other manga-ka (such as the creator of Naruto). It's just GT that I don't like.
I like the Pokemon GBA games. I like playing the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game (only with my brother, I'm not into the big card tournament things, and I don't like trading).

Didn't help that Cartoon Network was also hyping the Anime in their commercials as "Greatest Anime Ever" or something along those lines.

I definately get the points across that people have made her and now I know how the whole thing came about, but these people seriously need to find another hobby.
To me it's kind of like when you get people who hate anime putting a stupid post on an anime forum about anime sucking, thinking they are cool for doing it (Everyone has probably seen something like this by now.)

And I should have elucidated a little more when I said that DBZ and such were created to be "gateway anime". I should have simply said that they just seem to be good starting anime to interest people in what anime is all about.
And now most old "fans" (and I use the term loosely) talk about DBZ like it was an STD or something, And claim that they were never a fan just out of fear of being bashed upon.

I use to be a big DBZ fan and that interest has definately faded upon the discovery of other said anime that were much more impressive all around. But I never felt it necessary to bash DBZ for it. Because I just don't feel it necessary to really compare anime unless it is of the same continuity.(like Dragonball/Z/Gt or Full Metal Panic!/Fumoffu!)

And yes DBZ is not the "greatest action cartoon ever" just more like the "Greatest Action Cartoon of the Dragonball Z Fanboy Era"
