This just dawned on me... If there are 17 novels so far for Vampire Hunter D.. Why in the world is there only 2 movies? The VHD movies are internationally popular and fans would love more, whether it be an OVA, TV series or another movie.. it would profit. So why don't they translate more of these stories into anime? Has anything ever been posted about this before?
Also, does anybody know if bloodlust came from the novels like the first movie, or if it was a brand new story?

Bloodlust was based on the third book in the series, and took some liberties (which were mostly good).
They haven't adapted more because well.. no one wants to? Obviously some big marketting executive has sat down at some point, evaluated the projected profit margins of it all and said "You know what, fudge it". I wouldn't mind more films, but only if someone wanted to make them (Like Kawajiri and Bloodlust, which worked so so so well), not if someone forced them out.

At the time VHDB was one of the most expensive anime films to date. As a completely cel animated film, the budget was not cheap. I don't have an exact figure for production this information is rarely released, as you know, it was not cheap, certainly in the millions. If you must know I'd research MadHouse and/or contact their PR department and ask nicely.

I thought that Bloodlust was awsome... I am a sucker for painted cell animation (no pun intended). And the first book was awsome. I cannot wait until the second book comes out and I really hope that they publish that manga in english as well, I have seen pics on a few japanese sites. I just wish that it wasn't so expensive. But I digress. If they were to make any more anime, whether in the form of a show or a movie, they would probably wait to see how sucessful the books were on the North American market. If there was enough interest, then they would have insentive to make something. But if not many people are buying the books, then how many people would watch the anime/ go see/buy the movies? It would be nice to see more Vampire Hunter D, but it probably wouldn't be for a while if ever.
