So I started watching this as a joke. I mainly wanted to laugh at bubbles, sparkles, dramatic harpsichord chords and other shoujo tropes. While it's full of those things, I quickly found myself invested in the characters. Oscar is a badass and totally likable protagonist, and the supporting characters are great too.

The series also had really good pacing, and incorporated a surprising amount of real life characters and events. Given that the show's planted in real-historical events, I thought its scope was pretty ambitious and would suspect that if this was attempted today, it could have easily been one of the countless anime series that starts off strong and completely falls apart with a clumsy, premature, tacked-on ending. (And I'm not referring to Gainax Endings here. I actually enjoy those when done well.)

Honestly the only barrier or downside that I could think of for this series, would be the animation quality. The retro aesthetic is great and super charming. The animation itself though is obviously dated and looks poor. I was able to get past it, but I can see it being a deal-breaker for many anime fans.

Anyway, I'm left with wanting more and totally ordered both DVD sets from rightstuf. Very Happy

Don't really have too strong of a point here I guess. I just wanted to relish in the awesomeness of this series and gush a bit. :3

Edit-

Forgot to add that while watching the series, the story feels especially relevant today. Even though there are obvious major differences, I couldn't help but think of the whole occupy-99% thing that happened last year, along with the massacres currently happening in Syria.
