Well, it isn't a direct adaptation of the famous novel Botchan, but rather "The Times of Botchan" which is about the author. Created by Jiro Taniguchi and Natsuo Sekikawa and winner of the Tezuka award, "Times" focuses on the author of Botchan, Natsume Soseki, and how he created his masterpiece during the Meiji era.
As an intellectual, Soseki was resentful at Japan's transformation to become more like the West, while at the same time he was intrigued by what he could learn from the Westerners. This mix of facination and bitterness, as well as the fact that he was neurotic, made this era a tumultuous time for Soseki...as well as giving him the inspiration for his masterpiece. This is definitally the most facinating look at the Meiji era I've ever seen in manga, with interesting characters and a interesting conflict between tradition and adaptation. As always, Taniguchi's art is stunning, and the translation is solid as well.
The only real grip I have is Ponent Mon's format. They've always over charged, but 20 bucks for 130 pages of manga is ridiculous, no matter how good the materials are. That doesn't change the fact that "Times" is a superb piece of historical fiction, and definitally an accomplished piece of literature. For anyone looking for a smart, adult manga, definitally get your bookstore/comicbook store to order this.
