After finally receiving my copy of Genshiken DX I was watching the OVAs and realized they had a commentary track. At first I paid to attention to it because I usually couldn't careless about a dub commentary track, as I do not really follow dub voice actors. Much to my surprise, this commentary track was a Seiyuu commentary track. It immediately sparked my interest. Although I have not watched it yet since I have just watched the episode, the idea certaintly excites me. At the sametime though this also seems kind of rare to me.
Is it common for Seiyuus to have commentaries for dvds that are licensed in the US? I assume MediaBlasters had nothing to do with the Genshiken Seiyuu commentary right? What do you guys think of commentary tracks? I personally like them a lot assuming I care who the person is talking about it. Another example would be the director commentary for BECK. I thought it was great to hear about how they localized it for the dub. It's almost like an interview really but better because they talk about certain scenes that you see infront of you. Would anyone else like to see more Seiyuu commentary tracks or do you just prefer Dub Voice Actor ones? Do you even watch them?I'd personally love to see more seiyuu commentary tracks. As sad as this sounds that might even perk my interest in purchasing more. That or more interviews with directors/seiyuus. I haven't heard too many Japanese VA commentaries, but I've observed that VAs in either language have an equal chance of being funny/on-topic/informative or boring/off-topic/pointless. Japanese commentaries are probably more common than we think, but they're too expensive and time-consuming to be included on English-language releases most of the time. The licensees first have to pay the Japanese producers for the rights to use the commentaries to begin with, and the task of translating/subtitling commentaries is not an easy one. With anime dialogue, companies have access to scripts, and the actual speech is simpler, slower, and more "artificial" than actual Japanese. But with commentaries, there are no scripts, and translators have to deal with real native-speaker Japanese (faster talking, regional accents, speakers talking over one another, mumbling, etc.) from the audio alone. I prefer commentaries from people who are "behind the scenes," regardless of language. Like directors, producers, translators, script writers (ADR or original dialogue), or even sound engineers. They have more interesting insights into the show itself and the process of its production and/or localization. VA commentary can be informative and entertaining, but it's often random, off-topic, or otherwise banal. Sorry ADV/Funi VAs, but I don't think that that many anime fans care about what Houston/Dallas stage plays you've been in. |

If there's a commentary track on my DVD (English or Japanese, but I think the only Japanese one I have is for Code Geass) but mainly to play as background noise. Zalis is right, how interesting these tracks are really depends on who is talking and what they're job in producing the show actually is.

All for commentary. Just finished R.O.D and was a little sad that the Aniplex of America version didn't get the commentary compilation.

I've heard a lot of commentary tracks on both sides of the discussion, and they generally come in about 50/50 in terms of quality. Commentaries like on a lot of ADV's material were more an excuse to have actors ham it up, but stuff like their Megazone 23 commentary were great. If a commentary is going to be steeped in impossible to breech babble, I'd rather just skip it and save the money necessary to pick up the rights.
