How conservative Australia is when it comes to this stuff never ceases to amuse me. How much of a prude do you have to be to consider Totori an 18+ game?

Very disappointing and this also means it will be illegal for the game to be sold in part of Australia as well, R18+ isn't accepted by all the states yet for video games.

Sexual themes and fanservice, I'd presume. The entirety of the west has some seriously giant collective sexual dysfunction thanks to Christianity screwing everything up. |

not to shocking really look at neptuina games here in the states. There is very, very low tolerance for young anime girls in games in this day/age that people will not call you sick freak for liking. Hell I had my own personal problems with a guy on YouTube over disgea d2 of over sexualization of female characters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUE7oGMM5LQ
Which is why america has one of the highest rate of sex-offenders than many other developed nations. |

I just wanted to specify that this is the highest rate of known sex-offenders. Our country has a much more active awareness on the issue compared to most others, from what I've seen anyway. I could be wrong since I'm only basing this on stuff I've found online. An example of one country that may have a lot more than what they have recorded is Japan. It seems that more often than not in Japan, the victims stay quiet and so the sex offenders are left unknown while here in the US we're taught from pretty early on to tell people ASAP. |

What's really strange about this is that the PS3 version was apparently released with a lower rating of "PG" Source

The only real difference between the two is some bikini and other fanservicey types of costumes. Is that really enough to change the rating from Kids friendly to porn level? |

I don't really want to de-rail but there are so many cases of kids doing stupid sh** with camera phones which can end up on a registry or there is outraged parents that find out their 16 year old daughter had sex with some that is 19 "works in anime but not in real life". Yes we do report more often on these cases however it's gotten out of hand of what clarifies as sexual crime/assault now. On topic at @ryan yeah of course bikinis will always jack up the rating for these type of games because of over zelaous laws. Do you remember dead or alive dimensions for the 3ds being banned in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Australasia and, Scandinavia for child porn laws??? animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2011-06-14/dead-or-alive/dimensions-game-banned-in-australia |

Never played an Atelier game, but I'm wiling to wager that the rating has come from the dialogue. This wouldn't be the first Japanese game that has attracted a high rating because somebody made a rape/child abuse joke.

Here's the rating page. "References to sexual violence." Makes me think of things like Tiffany getting drunk and molesting the girls. The thing is, that was in the original game. For the sake of comparison, ratings for: Atelier Totori (PS3) (PG) Atelier Rorona (PG) Atelier Meruru (M) Atelier Ayesha (M) Neptunia (PG) Neptunia Mk2 (MA 15+) Tales of Graces f PG Annoyingly, most of them don't have the boxes with the ratings for individual elements. |

Oh wow, to think Atelier Totori is deemed appropriate for 6 year olds over here in Germany...
Wouldn't wanna change with you guys. I mean, seriously, Totori is nothing but cute and innocent, there's not even fanservice comparable to Disgaea or the like. Rating it 18+ is REALLY ridiculous. |

Yeah, to act like Totori is that bad is insane.
Yeah there are some fan service parts, but it's really mild. For the most part, the game puts off more of a cute vibe. Not all the time, but the majority. It's almost completely harmless. Teen rating, sure. There are alcohol references and it does deal with themes of death and such. It isn't for little kids, but it definitely isn't 18 and up. There definitely isn't sexual violence in the game. |

It's not like Disgaea hasn't been upfront about it since the very first game, so it seems a bit late to the party to complain about it.
Except they don't, unfortunately. It's easy to say someone was trained to do something, but the emotional and psychological turmoil that sexual assault causes cannot be adequately explained to someone who has never been touched by it, which causes a large unfortunate number of people to not report when they've been a victim of it, especially when most attackers are friends or family members. Yes, statistics are only 'reported crimes', but every country suffers from crimes being under reported, America is no exception, it's even called the most under-reported crime here. |

No, there's definitely fanservice. There's a an extended swimsuit scene late in the game (and it should make you really uncomfortable when watching it, not sure if that was the intent though) but you have to work for it. There's also several other fanservice scenes, though it is possible to finish the game without seeing them ("finish" being getting the Normal ending).
But yeah, nothing in it warrants this. |

Yes but I recall disgea selling gee I don't know 330,000 copies alone in the us, it got a greatest hits release and was not subject to the same negative feed back as most gust or nisa games now. Even x-play back in their glory days gave games like lapucell, makai kingdom, phantom brave, disgaea 1-2 a rating of 3 or 4 out of 5 |
