Not that this would affect me because I'm with another ISP, but does ANN realise that NTL provides over 20% of all UK broadband connections? That's nearly 1.5 million NTL subscribers, so of course there will be ambient abuse in proportion to this number. If on the other hand there's systematic abuse like DOS going on then ANN needs to report it directly to NTL (and within 48 hours) rather than threaten its own members.

I on the otherhand am an NTL cusomer, my ISP from what i have seen uses whole area IP address instead of seperate household/buisseness IP's. Meaning that a whole City or Town may have the same IP address. I would be greatly dissapointed if a ban was placed upon NTL customers as ANN is my most relaible source of anime info and it would be a shame if i could no longer access it due to some other persons stupidity.

so please ANN Contact NTL and find out who the exact persons are who are doing this.

Many thanks...

I too am an NTL customer and i don't get what this has to do with me. My IP address works fine.

If you have a problem with NTL's sevice try contacting NTL, they are an american company, you know.

I asure you all that my posts have been positive, for anime and ANN as a whole.

Well, I am sure that ANN has already contacted NTL. And if you have ever delt with an ISP, then you know that they are pretty stuborn, and usually refuse to make changes based off just one complaint. I have delt with so much crud from ISP's that this ban is just plain easier and more reliable.

So, to the contrary, eliminating the problem all together (by banning NTL IP's) saves ANN from a lot of work. The readers who want back in can help by complaining to NTL of the problems. Of course, I am sure that ANN will be working as well to find an alternate solution to this.

At least they are nice enough to inform the effected readers, and provide a solution to the issue.

But of course, thats IMHO.

This is true, but I'm not one of them, I had NTL for our main phone company and they were nothing but problems. I went back to BT eventually. I'm not too sure about the others but there really aren't that many UK members that are here at any one time, so it should have been easy to pin point any abuse coming from over here in the UK. However isn't NTL also a major ISP in the US as well?

Why would the matter? This site is run out of Canada IIRC, plus you make it sound like someone can just jump in a car and go to where ever NTL's owners are and ask them for help. IMO that would be like finding Bill Gates to personally complain to him about your computer not working right (if you use Windows OS). While it's a lovely thought it is extremly not likely to ever happen in anyone's who's reading this posts life time Twisted Evil

As for NTL being a major US company, it seems not to be the case according to its wikapedia listing

Everybody has their own IP address, the problem is NTL use Transparent Proxies. If you don't specify your own proxy, you are allocated one based on your location and the network load.

There are groups of proxies for localities around the UK. Everyone in a particular location is routed through the same proxy from their loca group for any one site so if that proxy is blocked, no-one in that area will be able to view the site unless they specify a different proxy manually (although this is not really a good solution as it affects the load balancing).
The Proxies pass on the client IP so it is possible to determine the actual culprit and not punish their entire neighbourhood.
