nintendo is crap for kiddies, they did nothing to PSP - it was running for 7 years and just outdated. This NGP destroys anything nintendo has to offer.
Oooh, 3D - no [expletive] shit, if you're 13.

I'll have to agree. I read the liveblog of the press conference on Kotaku and a LOT of things bothered me.

1. A lack of titles: The press conference barely had any games for it. We had Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, and Resistance, but NONE of these were confirmed to be original or just ports from the PS3. What third parties showed up merely showed tech demos that demonstrated how one could port PS3 games to the NGP. Not exactly something to get excited about.

2. The tech involved: I won't deny that the thing is an impressive piece of hardware, but there's something that Sony seems to have missed: this is the exact same situation the PSP had with the DS. Undeniably the PSP is by far more powerful than the DS, but Nintendo STILL beat Sony into the ground with their plucky, quirky, underpowered device. Furthermore I don't see what the NGP has besides graphical power that the 3DS DOESN'T except from a second analog stick. Also, the bells and whistles make me worry about:

3. The price: NO PRICE WAS ANNOUNCED. I'll admit that they'll probably wait until E3 to announce that, but it still makes me worry. The 3DS is priced at $250 with far inferior graphics than the NGP and that's BEFORE you get into the NGP's touch sensitive OLED screen, touchpad, and 3G connectivity. There is NO WAY this thing is going to match the 3DS' price, it'll be lucky to only be $300 at launch. The PSP launched at $250 which was a more than hundred dollars over the DS at the time.

I can't see how the NGP is going to compete with the 3DS. And that's before I get into it not being backwards compatible with UMD games. It looks to me like Sony just didn't get why Nintendo beat them in their last tussle with handhelds.

What? Um the Ds came out before the PSP and Nintendo utterly destroyed it. Nintendo is why video games are here no other company is moving forward with games like Nintendo is, Sony is just copying everyone. The PSP2 is nothing but a Ipad with buttons and like the link feature that it has, they stole that from Nintendo's 3DS with street and spot pass. There is NO originality to it nothing to push the future of gaming. There waiting for Nintendo, Microsoft and Apple to do that so they can follow.

Anyway for you to make the statement you did you are either a fanboy or one of the stupid kids from this generation who doesn't understand the History of video games. I will give the PSP2 this it has 3G other than that its a piece of Trash... And looks at the Sales numbers you gotta be a fool to say that the DS didn't do anything to the PSP the DS is the top selling system of all time. Do your research before you challenge someone with knowledge

The fact that CoD was announced for the NGB that has dual analog plus Monster Hunter Hunter alone will make it sale well. Will it be as successful as the 3DS? Maybe not but I doubt I'll be a failure.

You do realize Nintendo just announced the games and price tag for the 3ds just last week, and it's due out in march. The NGP won't be due for about a year, so if you've ever followed a system release expecting specifics at this point would be kind of silly. If Sony can secure this system and have a steady stream of quality games there will be a market for it that Nintendo won't be able to reach with the 3ds.

@Mario

What good would come from Sony leaving the gaming indusry? You may be satisfied with Nintendo's limited(in quality) library but not enough is offered on their systems for a gamer like me.

While I am excited about the 3ds and have one on pre-order, this NGP has my blood rushing. Now if Sega puts Valkeria Chronicles or Atlus puts Persona on this handheld and not a console I won't be pissed like I have been. Very Happy

That is what a Xbox is for. PS3 and Xbox 360 ultimately share the same games and they always come out better on the 360. And Call of Duty suck 1 and 2 I am 100% sure Call of Duty will always be released on every console ever till the end of time AND Monster Hunter will show up on the 3DS I am sure of it the creator already said more than like 4 times that he want Monster Hunter on the 3DS. Monster Hunter + Pokemon on 1 console = which console you think people would pick?

For Fun!

Monster Hunter + Pokemon would kick ultimate ass! I'd love to kick Charizard's ass!

Have you ever seen something and known right away you were going to buy it? That's what I thought when I saw this.

As for the DS vs. PSP, I will fully admit that in the US, DS definitely came out on top. However, it seems like everyone over here in Japan has a PSP. As this generation of video games has matured, PSP has definitely come out on top. I purchased a PSP a half year ago, and man, I have to admit, it's hard to go back to the DS after this. The only thing that was saving the DS was its touch screen, which this system now has.

That being said, I will probably end up with both the 3DS and the PSP2, but at this point, if pressed, I'd go for the PSP2. (I refuse to call it the NGP)

yes, I know, I'm not ignorant. I am well aware that Sony releasing the thing in the holiday season of this year. But keep in mind, the 3DS was also unveiled at E3 of last year about 8 or 9 months before its launch (for the NGP it's about 10 or 11 months) and they beat the HELL out of NGP's unveiling by showing tons of third party support and even first party games that were playable and original.

And it actually bugs me how Sony had this conference and didn't really have a lot to show content wise. It's entirely possible that this was done in an attempt to try and steal thunder from the 3DS and I hate to break it to them, THEY FAILED. What I saw was Sony once again trying the failed PSP strategy by just barreling forward with power instead of innovation. And that's before the tech involved which is more than likely going to make the NGP WAY more expensive than the 3DS. I see another handheld generation dominated by Nintendo with Sony not really understanding the market again. And this time, it might cost them more than they bargained for.

According to the Wiki numbers, there is literally not a single region that the PSP did NOT get beaten at least 2 to 1 by the DS. Japan included. The PSP had 4 iterations of hardware as did the DS as well (if you include the DSi family)

But the market that this would appeal to is someone like me, someone who has all three current console(finally got a Wii) but wants the highest possible Visuals, A.I. and physics that you can get on a handheld. As for your Pokemon/Monster Hunter argument, while those do sell like hot cakes those are aimed at a younger demographic, I believe the NGP could appeal to an older demographic if they do things right. And new IP's can always be made. At one point not so long ago Monster Hunter was a new IP.

@AiddonValentine

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be overly rude with my last post but this thing has got me excited.

The PSP was recently outselling the DS in Japan by a very large margin. In fact they've sold out, there's a shortage thanks to Monster Hunter. PSP has also been getting stronger support from developers as of late.

The PSP has been at the top of the weekly Media Create sale charts for quite some time now in Japan. Granted, if you add up all three versions of the DS (DSL, DSi, DSXL) the DS will often sell better, but that doesn't change the fact that the PSP outsells the consoles every week (including the week GT5 game out). Two weeks before Monster Hunter Portable 3ed came out the sales doubled to 96,601, the next week it was 75,689, but the week of the release it shot up to 323,653! It stayed above 150,000 for the next three weeks and nearly 100k the fourth week until the shortage hit a few weeks ago.

The PSP may have it's good days and bad days in the US, but in Japan where the companies are much more interested in their domestic sales numbers the PSP has been doing very, very well consistently these days. No doubt it's these sales numbers that have prompted them into putting so many features into a the PSP successor.

No, I'm of the opposite mind, the 3DS is going to be in trouble if the 3D is as hard on the eyes as people say it is and the graphics are a pretty minimum step up from the DS (like Gamecube to Wii) as well as its features. I'm very hopeful for the NGP, especially if it's as close to a handheld PS3 as people say it will be.

My only gripe is the lack of AV ports like on the PSP 2000 and 3000, this part feels like a step backwards unless you can sync to the PS3 to play through the TV. Also not a big fan of playing by holding with my finger tips like shown in the pictures. Also not sure what good six-axis is for game play when you're holding the screen, sounds annoying. I have no clue what the touch pad on the back could be useful for.
