Am I wrong, or is yaoi really much more popular than yuri? If so, why?
How about shounen-ai and shoujo-ai, is one of them leading?
I'm wondering because in "normal" (non-anime) movies today it's very popular to have some women making out or so (and I think it's safe to say that a lot of men also like this)...
BTW: I think that's also a manga related question, meaning I don't want to limit the answers only to anime... (since there's no anime&manga forum I posted it here)

From what I have seen at conventions Yaoi is more popular. For what reasons? Maybe it's a "safer" alternative live-action gay porn. I'm not gay so I don't really know why people like it so much (but I can guess!!!). At conventions the Yaoi people seem to be in there element, it’s like they hide there whole gay life on the out side and when they go to the convention they let it all out (damn yaoi paddles!!!). I believe the reason why girls like yaoi is because they think its cute or something, which in case the reason why yuri isn’t as well received as yaoi (though you it should be). It could be because guys only see the sexual attraction in it, not the cuteness that girls see in it’s counter part. Plus girls are always half naked and cute in all pretty much every anime so guys doing this would bring a new type of cuteness to be attracted to, thus converting people to yaoi or shounen-ai type products.
edit -- grammer...

I think that most of the situation arises from the fact that while there is alot of shounen-ai manga that appeals to women, most of the shoujo-ai manga is written more so that it will appeal to women that it will to men. Also, most of the girls that I know that read shounen-ai do so more for the romantic aspects of the story than for the "other" aspects of the stories.
Which means that the market for shounen-ai is much larger than that for shoujo-ai. Case and point - how much shoujo-ai is out there that has been translated to English? Other than Revolutionary Girl Utena and hard-core yuri I cannot think of very much.

Yes, I do agree with msi435. I've never seen any yuri manga or anime that didn't involve hentai(not that I ever read/watched any.) The ones I've seen on the internet always end up with hentai and I dont think alot of people read/watch yuri...
As for yaoi, I think its more popular to the fact that some manga or anime dont expose as much. Like some manga or anime could have a good plot, great animation, or comedy.(Gravitation!) That's why I pretty much enjoy yaoi...
if that doesnt make since much, then im sorry.Just saying things from the top of my head.

Whoa... There's yuri in Madlax? Wow. And I started to like that show... |
Well, there's some shoujo-ai, not yuri. There aren't any really sexual scenes between women or so. Anyway, would this be a reason for you to stop watching it?

I guess it has to do with sexual preferance, I'm a hetrosexual female, I prefer yaoi over yuri because don't like yuri due to my sexual preferance. You would think yuri would be more popular then yaoi because our culture promotes lesbiens and you don't see many homosexual guys on tv. Also for every strip bar where the strippers are male there are five strip bars where the strippers are female. Maybe all the lesbien fans arn't into anime, I don't know. Or maybe there are more female/homosexual male fans?

I think that yaoi and yuri are popular in their own way, but the yaoi fandom is far more organized than the yuri fandom.
I used to be a great yuri fan... i loved girl on girl action (live or animated) until i realized that i was getting sick by it. I respect homosexuals, both men and women in the same way, but i can't agree with the promotion of homosexuality as an irresponsable trend.
Both men and women are into yuri/yaoi because of sex. The female yaoi fans that i know love to write fanfics not about romance, but about rape and weird stuff between guys. I used to belive that we (men) were far more pervert than girls. I was wrong.
Here in my country there are clubs for yuri and for yaoi. There are lot of people in the yaoi side, but the yuri side is growing really fast, even there are people in both clubs.
As a gay man wrote here, in this forum, the yaoi doesn't help the gay cause. Yaoi and yuri turn gays and lesbians into sexual fetishes aimed to horny teens and people with serious mental problems. Of course, we are talking about yaoi and yuri, animated gay porn, not shoujo or shounen ai (gravitation for example is shounen ai, not yaoi).
I ve found out by my own experience that people with low self steem or with problems to have relationships with the other sex usually use yaoi/yuri as an scape. Its all about the fantasy.
I also belive that a reason of why yaoi have a larger fandom is that somehow girls can feel more attached to a gay relationship that men, playing the rol of one of the guys in their minds. (This sounds like a theory from Freud).
We usually choose anime and games that features a lot of girls interested in one guy and we in our minds take the place of the guy.

From what I've known and heard, yaoi and shounen-ai reigns. Don't ask me why, though. I'm not really interested in yaoi or yuri so... As for shounen-ai, maybe it's cos it shows that males aren't that all masculine? I don't know, but I do know which is more popular.
