I have to wonder how much money was spent to do said edits, and is the sales justifying the edits to make it worthwilde?

I think it's horrible. Wouldn't every artist be offended if something like this was done to his or her work?
It made me wonder how the licensing business works. Can someone explain it to me? How can an American publisher get the license rights? Do the Japanese manga or anime creators have a say in that decision? Who decides?
Because in that case (Tenjho Tenge), wouldn't it be better if they had looked for another publisher (if this is a stupid question, please don't kill me)?

I doubt it cost much. They aren't that well done and touch-up artists aren't generally very well paid.

Generally, the Japanese rights owners decide, but there can also be contractual issues there.
Some successful manga-ka own the rights to their manga. New manga-ka, and the ones that are just breaking out, rarely own the rights to their titles.
My guess is that Oh! Great does own the rights to Tenjho Tenge, given that this is not his first successful manga. But that's pure conjecture on my part.
In other cases, the artist may not own the rights, but the publisher mayhave contractual obligations to get the artist's permission before selling the manga to a publisher.
It was recently ruled however, that regardless of who owns the rights to the property, the creator maintains certain "author's rights." Even if Oh! Great sold the entire license for Tenjho Tenge to the publisher, he could still stop them from making changes. This however changes if Oh! Great created Temjho Tenge as an employee or under contract to the publisher. (confusing huh?).
As for the US licensor, their rights vary from contract to contract. They may or may not have the rights to do various things, like edit, or release on the internet. See for example Nutech, which is being sued for releasing Ken Groove titles as online rentals.
It would appear that CMX either has Carte Blanche to edit, or they are making the edits with someone's aproval (be it Oh! Great, or a Japanese agent).
It has happenend in the past where contracts permitted the US licensors to make edits, and the Japanese creators were furious with the results. The two most notable examples are Warriors of the Wind & Miyazaki, and Robotech and Kawajiri.

Sometimes you have to wonder why can't they just leave things unedited, shrink rap it, and put a big sticker on the shrink rap saying something like "THIS TITLE CONTAINS MATURE CONTENT AND IS MENT FOR 18+ READERS ONLY!" or something like that. I mean I'm totally against editing manga....I mean unless those edits were sanctioned by the author. I mean even IF they're like Tenjho Tenge where it depicts graphic sexual situations....people should realize that not all comics are kids stuff, and not all manga is in the cutesy-wutsy kiddy genre.

No, if it means getting a nice fat check and exposure from another country, most "new" mangaka will lean towars the money and exposure.
I think most mangaka arn't really aware of the sucess of their manga in another country until someone tell them (watch the gto interview). They do care a lot about the success of the manga in their own country.

Wow.. just.. wow. I knew TenTen was a perverted series, but I didn't know how adult it really was until I looked at all those edits and comparisons, since I haven't read it. What a stupid decision to market this for younger audiences.

Makes me wonder what they're going to do with the whole Mitsuomi-Maya-Shin-Mana quadrangle... I mean, fairly explicit sex is one thing, but there are those strong incestuous overtones in the relationship between Shin and Maya...
Damn. I was looking forward to buying this manga, but after all this I'll just get the original, Japanese version.

You kinda wonder they out of all the manga titles, why they chose this to market towards an younger audience? It's a strange reasoning. It's gonna be interesting how long this would last.

There are scenes to come that are worse as well. Given the context of the series, it's clearly evident that it was an inappropriate decision to censor this in order to sell it to a teen audience.
Besides, given how flooded the "teen" market is, I think they would have sold more if it were properly marketed towards adults. CMX has lost any chance at money from me, and I hope this flops.

DC didn't really know what they were getting into when they were starting their CMX line so they hired the guy who used to run Gutsoon, to get popular manga for their lineup.
It just so happen that TenTen has a huge following and would be consider a "popular" properties. DC then realize that this title was very mature, but since it's so huge among the fans, lets try and market this to teens too.

Idiots, wasting their time doing this (That's Short)
And the Title did say something like "Edited for US Release" That is kind of cool, because when People don't know it's Edited and read that, they think, Hell I'm getting that, DL a Scanlation Uncut and Unedited for free, don't want this Rubbish.
[edit - no. -b]
Hope someone sues CMX for saying "100% Pure Manga From Japan" for their Moto or something on the lines of that, as these people are full of Rubbish, They DEGRADE the Manga Industry.

I could see the rational in their decision. After all, TenTen may have very graphic content, but plot wise it's more in line with a shonen series, as it's mostly fights and fanservice, with the author's attempts to create character drama falling short (at least for a while). Still probobly a bad decision, but I could see their rational.
Another theory is that CMX is planning to release an uncut version months later, sort of like a special edition. I'm sure that they'd love to get the hardcore fans and some of the people who already bought the cut version to shell over ten more dollars. This is of course just a thought, but I wouldn't dismiss it.

IMHO these edits aren't even necessary if they want to sell it to a teen audience. I didn't see anything that a teenager shouldn't be allowed to see. I mean, some naked breasts and panties... so what??
But of course I don't know about the situation in the US, would they have to put an age restriction (18+ ?) on an unedited version?
tempest: Thanks very much for your detailed answer!
