What's the relationship between the Appleseed OVA and movie? Is one the sequel to the other or just different versions of the same story?

They have some story simularities since they are both based on Masamune Shirow's manga, but they are basicly two different animes telling the same story. The characters are the same but the movie looks way better since the OVA is a much older show. The OVA does cover some things that were in the manga that were not in the movie version though.

In the case of Appleseed, there are two versions now:
- the Original Video Animation version, with (IMHO) an much more interesting and thought-provoking storyline.
- the Movie, which has a more action-oriented storyline that has some of the same thought-provoking material.
