I absolutely love DearS Very Happy . Along with Chrono Crusade , Full Metal Panic, and Excel Saga, it's one of my favorite titles. The artwork is pretty splendid, and Peach-Pit (the creators of DearS) draws the characters proportionately well. Ren is a pretty charming and innocent character, and despite her obvious physical beauty and her progressive (yet innocent) approach to nudity, does display more intelligence than her "master" Takeya. The comedic timing this series displays is nearly perfect, and makes for extremely hilarious situations, especially Ren's obsession with melon bread and Takeya's absurdely lascivious teacher. I read the first volume at least three times and just recently bought Vol. 2, which introduces the equally charming and attractive (but overhyper, brass, and loud-mouthed) Miu-chan (who happens to be my favorite character in the series thus far Smile) . Highly recommended. Cool

I enjoy DearS probably more than I should.

It made me laugh, and I'll recommend anything that does.

Heh, well, I didn't like the following:

Hanayako Maid Tai (but La Verita was decent, I espically liked the ending)
Sister Princess

Um, I'm currently watching He Is My Master. With only two episodes out, the jury is still out, but I thought the manga was funny.

Depends on how you define "Harem" anime.

Does Saber Marionette J (all of them) count?

I don't consider DearS to be a "harem", it's really the shonen versoin of Chobits.(whick I also liked)

After reading volume one my thoughts were:

1) Not going to read anything more of this manga
2) Not going to bother watching the anime either

There's good harem stories and there's bad harem stories, and DearS is squarely in the latter category. The jokes are silly and recycled, the story one big cliche. Sometimes the written word can be compensated with expressive art but here too DearS falls short. I guess it's not a complete waste but there's much better stuff to spend your money on.

According to the DearS website from TOKYOPOP, there are 7 volumes. Volume 3 will be available on July 12 and Volume 4 will street on October 11.

Definitely buy this book. The characters are very charming. (Miu-chan rules! Razz )

Part of my response is taken from the DearS anime entry in the Encyclopedia:

A year ago, 150 aliens crash-landed on Earth and, without a way to get home, began to permanently integrate themselves into Earth culture. These aliens, called "DearS" by the Earthlings, are a slave species whose sole purpose is to serve and please their masters. One day, Ikuhara Takeya spots a person shivering behind some bushes. This person, Ren, is one of the DearS, and after being saved by Takeya she chooses him as her master. Takeya, who doesn't know about the master-slave relationship of DearS, tries to learn Ren the normal lifestyle of the people on earth, though he constantly fears that Ren is an evil alien who's trying to brainwash him. But Ren isn't like other DearS. She is in fact malfunctioning and is being tracked down by their leader. From what I read, DearS has elements that are similar to the anime/manga series Chobits, but I'm not sure since I haven't read nor seen Chobits yet.

Also, check out the DearS manga entry in the Encyclopedia as well.

I just read this today and thought it was fairly good. I will probably continue buying the rest of the series. I prefer shoujo, where the characters have a little more depth, but these characters were cute and funny. I think the teacher is hilarious, if not odd, and I also wonder how she keeps her job.
