Wow Erin, so I take it you shaved your beard, regressed your age, and changed your gender when I saw you at MangaNext?
*OK, really, this is the last time I'll refer to Zac's Dirty Pair-related comment from ANNCast... But this was just such an appropriately odd situation to make the joke.* But in all honesty, nice to see you still recommending Golgo, and I am looking forward to start watching Dirty Pair. |

I have to go with Zac's opinion of Dirty Pair from the last ANNCast. I maybe don't mind it as much but it's not something I really got into in terms of 80's anime. It's one of those titles you really have to see and judge for yourself as it really is a "love it" or "hate it" kinda show.

This thread is for discussing Shelf Life, not ANNCast. Thanks for the instant thread derail Lord Geo, I really appreciate it.

I don't think Sentai will drop Golgo 13 when there over half way done with the series. Its only 50 EPs and considering there up to 26, I don't understand what the point would be in stopping now, even if they don't dub the rest.

I also hope that they release the remainder of Golgo 13. Even if it was subtitled-only, they still would at least be in a position where they were releasing episodes that weren't even fansubbed on the Internet prior to the official release.
The mention of the failed comedy attempts in the Golgo 13 dub practically leaped off the monitor for me, not so much because it was in Golgo 13 (which shouldn't really have jokes proper in it at all) as much as who directed that dub: Steven Foster. In years past, this guy caught tons of perfectly-justified flak for adding unfunny jokes into dub scripts of things, particularly one-time fan favorite Gensomaden Saiyuki. I would not call myself a fan (I wrote that in 2007 and I still believe it). Over the last few years he'd been working primarily on dubbing more dramatic work such as Le Chevalier d'Eon and Appleseed: Ex Machina, and those were at least "acceptable." It made me conclude "well, maybe this guy isn't so terrible as long as they just make him stick to non-comedy." Can anyone tell me more about these lame contemporary jokes inserted into the Golgo 13 dub that'll date themselves horribly in a few years time? I'd check myself, but I'm not a bad enough dude to listen to Steven Foster anime dubs. |

Some of the voice actors involved in the production, most notably David Wald, have confirmed that the entire series has already had it's dub completed. So, it will probably be seeing release in a few months. If you noticed with Sentai's longer series, like Eyeshield and GinTama, they take longer breaks between the the first two sets and the third and fourth ones. |

I have to agree with you Erin on Eyeshield 21 Collection two. I actually bought it but I have yet to open it. ( Plus if the chance of me having to part with the dvd series occurs, at least I can sell the entire series.) I love Eyeshield but like single dvd releases for series, there always the chance there will be a collection of episodes that are not so great and you have to choose to purchase it for the sake of collecting or passing on it and waiting for the next release. Thanks again!

Still cannot bring myself to be interested in Golgo 13, as some of its elements remind me of the worst parts of Lone Wold and Cub in terms of women and sex... but huh, Dirty Pair. I'd always been turned off by the title, which made it sound like a bad lesbian porno, but I've (1) heard enough good things about it and (2) am still in my "catch up on older, influential shows" mode that I think maybe I need to rent this.

Hey, I did bring it back on-topic at the end of my post. And it's gotten back on track quite nicely already. |

Eyeshield 21: I'm curious, weren't we supposed to get this anime dubbed on TV here?
Dirty Pair: I'm watching Dirty Pair (or I've been trying to; it's a great series, but I keep getting off track). I've seen the first three episodes myself and they're all fantastic. I'm really surprised I missed such an entertaining series back in its time (though I was too young to watch it and my parents would have killed me if I had somehow managed to). I plan to stick to this show until it's done. |

Are you a Hitchiker Erin? Me, I always make sure I put a towel in my bag whenever I go somewhere. I agree that the original BBC TV series was pretty good. The movie is OK, but it's not the same.
I haven't picked up Dirty Pair part 1 yet, I'm waiting for part 2 to release first, but I do have all of the OVA's and movies. Kei and Yuri are just two girls trying to have a good time and make a living, which they're actually pretty good at. It's not their fault that planets get blown up in their wake. They are fun to watch, the banter between them can be pretty funny, and I've heard that the TV series was more highly rated than any of the other releases, so I will be getting these. |

Funny you should mention her, as there's a sci-fi spoof one-shot wih similar designs which she did which came out from CPM called Maris the Chojo. It's only on tape, though. [Soapboxing removed] |

Happy to see Dirty Pair get a fair shake - and I'm happier to see that folks notice that the older style of animation is actually considerably better and more expensive than more recent animation. I'm so tired of seeing reviews of anime titles from the 70s and 80s that dismiss the art with "looks OK for the time it was made."
Dirty Pair is one of those series that just puts me a nice, comfortable place. Along with sci-fi anime from the same era -- They Were 11, Crusher Joe -- it's what delights me. Anime mac and cheese. |

I had written down some of the other jokes, but I don't have my notes with me. There was a reference to the recent Arizona immigration laws in one episode. In another episode, the owners of a small bed and breakfast say that Golgo can rent "the Honeymoon Suite" which isn't in the subs. To me, it sounded like they probably recorded several takes including one "joke" take, and then made "joke" track for the show. I bet they snuck it through the approval process, or nobody cared, or there wasn't an approval process. (Or they thought it was hilarious...)
I'd be interested in hearing what you thought of the show's gender politics. Kei and Yuri are sort of like OL's, and it's implied in the show that if either of them get married they'll have to quite their job(s) and it will be the end of the Dirty Pair. |
