I was wary of it because A) I heard it was below Miyazakai's finest and B) because of Noah Cyrus and Frankie Jonas
Well the dub is overall fantastic, the localization was great. So now that my two biggest fears are put to rest... It's a really solid effort. It blows Howl's out of the water by far. It very much evokes the charm of Kiki and Totoro, but naturally falls short of either of those. It's just that after a string of heavier movies (Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's) it's nice to see him go back to a more simpler tale. Bravo. And if that was Noah doing the Voice of Ponyo, she was charming as all hell. Frankie was solid as well. |

I watched the Japanese version and didn't even bother watching the dub. Walt Disney doesn't deserve anime. Period.

Dude, do you remember when the black dude in the 40 Year Old Virgin was telling the virgin to stop putting woman on a pedestal? Yeah, stop doing that. Anime is not some golden trinket. I regret spending 30 dollars on the Blu-Ray, but I would have happily spent 15 dollars on it. I saw it with my little brother and he adored it. The dub is not bad, but I think I'll rewatch it with the sub. It's so interesting to see legit children PLAYING children. What a concept, eh? |

Couldn't agree with you any more on this. 
I watched both versions and enjoyed either or. This movie would definitely be something I would show my kids (when I have some). Disney doesn't deserve anime? Isn't that like saying American/Canadian children don't deserve anime? Kinda harsh, no? 
I enjoyed Ponyo. It was so cute. I own the DVD/Blu-Ray combo set and it looks amazing on Blu-Ray. I have yet to be disappointed with a Miyazaki movie. |

The only complaints that I ever heard about the dub where unintelligent. It was either your typical dub hater who thinks all dubs suck, or someone complaining that Noah Cyrus and Frankie Jonas where in it. Hey, I don't like the Cyrus or the Jonas family either, but that doesn't mean I'll refuse to watch a dub just because their in it, it comes off as very immature. Also if your really that worried about who's in it rather than how good it is than just focus on the cool people like Tina Fey, Matt Damon, Betty White, Liam Neeson, ext. I think it's best to ignore the hate that Disney dubs get and just watch it.
As for the movie it self, I was disappointed. I was really hoping for another piece of Myiazaki gold but instead I got silver. Now don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie, but it just didn't feel right. The pacing seemed really weird and the plot didn't seem to have a real direction. It felt like the rising action wasn't really there, like the climax just kind of happened for no reason. But that said, the visuals in the movie were quite amazing. I think this movie has a good show of Studio Ghibli's artistic might rather than Myiazaki's story telling abilities. |

Well, I kind of have a right to complain about whatever I want, don't I? And in the end, didn't I just say that they put forth a very solid effort? I'll go as far as saying Noah's was probably the standout performance. I'm not one to bash Disney's dubs. In fact, I think they're overall very well done (the exceptions being Cat Returns and Howls). I just didn't like the casting choices of relatives of their then studio darlings. It wouldn't have prevented me from seeing the movie, it just wasn't something I was keen on. Now, as for the sub... how is the sub job? I hated that Howl's was white against white/pastel backgrounds. Did they do anything like that? Is their sub track just the dub script like Cat Returns? |

That was exactly what I was thinking. Well, i might be the only person out there to think so, but I think Miyazaki, amazing as he is, has been out of shape for the past few years really. Ponyo is much better than Howl's Moving Castle that I personally found quite terrible... Ponyo confused me, because all in all I could not exactly get what it was supposed to be about, it is hard to explain it, but all in all a few months after watching it I can harly remember what it was about. It was sure cute and touching, but among all the Ghibli stories, I would not plce it among the best ones. I loved some of the scenes, but the whole thing laked something that would make abetter connection between them. |

Miyazaki said in interviews that while Totoro was good, he wanted to make something for a "younger" audience.
Think that says it all.

Where I come from we have a saying that goes something like this once translated: "You think of bread when you're hungry" 
It does not say anything to me really... Laputa was for younge audience and I still thought it was brilliant. So was Totoro, and lets say Whisper of the Hears was not something I would say was primarily aimed at adults either. Ponyo might just be aimed at even younger kids, but still, it lacked what the above films had. |

I really love Ponyo
I rate it third among Ghibli works after Spirited Away and Totoro and just above Whisper of the Heart and Kiki's. It's pure heart and imagination and the animation is magically beautiful. If there's a problem it's that it is a magical film about an island destroying Tsunami event. Luckily no one was hurt

Ponyo was a good film and the dub that Disney made was great. All the voices fit perfectly for each character, but I haven't watched the subbed version, so I can't do a comparison between the two.
I watched all Miyazaki films recently since my sister went on a Studio Ghibli spending spree and I definitely found Ponyo more enjoyable than Totoro. |
