Are female anime fans envious of the abundance of content targeted at men? Since I enjoy both male and female-oriented subject matter (fanservice for example), I don't have envious feelings. But I think most women are underserved and underappreciated by manga and anime creators, or the lack of them that put out female friendly content other than magical girl shows (not aimed at men).

Basically all the women out there, or perhaps men too, should there be more stuff for women and girls? Or is there a large segment of the female fanbase who do enjoy shounen, mecha, dark fantasy/horror (often targeted at women anyway), and martial arts shows/books?

Is this even possible? To correct this: introduce a new genre called Magical Boy.

As a guy, hell yes there should be more! I mean, if women can tolerate bouncing breasts and panty shots, surely we can deal with the bare chest and bouncing... um... dang, female anime fans have it rough.

Are there series out there being skipped because the target audience is assumed to be men? For example, Lucky Star. Is there anything about this show which doesn't target girls?

There's a growing number of "slice of life" anime and much of it should cater to both audiences. Most of what I've enjoyed has actually been lacking "fanservice", which makes it more entertaining for me.

Curiously, I wonder how the anime market will respond to a series of young-looking boys in their underwear who defend their homeland using mechanical ponies they strap themselves into fighting space aliens made from sequins and feathers.

Crap. Someone's going to make this. I just felt a rip in the anime-marketing continuum.

Would anime that offers the same kind of physical fanservice appeal to women the same way it does to men?
I think 07 Ghost, Ouran High School Host Club, and Vampire Knight are non-magical girl anime aimed at women or at least not pandering to men.

Although some of the best anime made features empowered female characters.

Studio Ghibli, Nuf Said.

I can name off a few more shows that are female targeted, like Supergals, and anything Shonen Ai / Yaoi, but really anime is just a medium, not a genre.

I do wonder how the ladies feel, since the shows truly aimed at them tend to be very niche.

Sorry, took too long on reply.. LOL.. Lucky Star! Yeah, I remember the same fight and Sailor Moon at one time too!

Actually, there's a bit out there - it's just that we have to look a little harder than the guys usually do and material aimed at us doesn't usually end up on Region 1 TV.

The last few years have actually not been bad. Off the top of my head, Honey and Clover, NANA, Ouran High School Host Club, Ghost Hunt, The Wallflower, La Corda d'Oro, Paradise Kiss, and the first season of xxxHOLiC (which is technically seinen but I've read was intended as josei and is certainly female friendly at the very least) have all seen releases. Vampire Knight has begun the single disk phase of it's Region 1 release. X TV and Petshop of Horrors have both seen recent rereleases.

Add to that quite a few female-friendly seinen works like Wolf's Rain, Mushishi, Emma and the Shinkai movies, as well as some additional works like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Kino's Journey, Haibane Renmei and The Twelve Kingdoms, and things aren't looking as bad as they seem at first.

Surely there are a lot of female oriented animes out there not to mention animes that has female as main character.

I don't think girls don't even care if there are male-oriented animes.

Anime has more male-targetted stuff.

Manga has more female-targetted stuff.

It balances out.

I was attracted to anime as a young girl from stuff like Dragonball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Tenchi in Tokyo (I remember Tenchi because in 3rd grade I wrote a 2-paragraph essay about my favorite television show and this was it).

Most of the anime I was exposed to, and I think this applies to a good amount of people, was action-oriented and male-targeted. Unless they were attracted to anime through something like Sailor Moon, I think its a safe bet that they like shonen-oriented shows. If I didn't like action, I wouldn't have liked Dragonball Z, and I would never have gotten into anime at all. Sure, I enjoy Ouran as much as the next chick, but that show came much later.

So basically my tastes were actionny from the start and I don't mind my shows to be male-oriented. I even like a lot of ecchi or shonen romance shows. Midori Days is a great show, as is Hatsukoi Limited, which I can't even believe ran in Shonen Jump. A lot of male shows these days are like that, especially with their all-female casts. Taishou Yakyuu Musume is apparently targeted towards males, but I think it's a great show for girls.

So, no, I'm not really envious of that fact at all. As a female, I don't even have specifically female tastes. So I'm cool with it.

Try Minami-ke.

3 sisters, show is completely void of violence or sex. It's a slice of life comedy.

From what some of the other people said in this thread, it seems to be common for many women to like shounen and action because, after all anime is escapist entertainment. So any girl who breaks away from the norm of mainstream entertainment probably goes as far as enjoying anime that doesn't match her target demographic either.

This is probably why we also see things that on the surface look like its for girls, but is actually aimed at men, and vice versa. This is a product of creators realizing that a lot of men do like magical girl shows, so why not make a magical girl show for guys, but not really change all that much? The same is true of horror and darker shows that I've mentioned earlier, such as Jigoku Shoujo. It seems to have quite a large female following but I think the target audience is girls even though something like that made 10 years ago, would have been unthinkable to market it to girls.

If we are to have Magical Boy shows I think they would still be required to wear a skirt Laughing

And it's aimed at men...

I know, hard to believe something aimed at men could be completely void of violence or sex and even feature crossdressing.

I tend to not think too much of the target audience for a series. For me most of the time, its all about the characters and if they are likable/relate to me. Which I do often in the same camp as action and fantasy aimed at guys, but I don't care.

The only thing that gets me sometimes is the usual fanservice for the male viewer. Especially if its unrealistic. I can take a few second panty shot thing, but bouncing boobs going all over the place, that show has to be really good for me to continue(GoldenBoy).

But I would also like to see more female leads, but do fear that most will be in genres I don't normally venture to, like slice of life shows and the likes. I'm still a fantasy type of viewer for the most part.

Well it's a slice of life show so while it may focus on girly things, it does it in a way that girls wouldn't really see any entertainment in it. Guys on the other hand, it's fascinating because it reveals a POV that guys don't have the luxury of in real life. And that is why I see Lucky Star as almost 100% targeted towards males.

This has me at a loss. What wouldn't be entertaining in it?

The reason I ask is because there are quite a few anime I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to women, but would do so with a misinterpretation of what they want.

I wish this is what I took away from it. What I saw was otaku girl talking over the heads of her friends leading to snarky girl quipping about otaku girl leading to two girls who don't even know how the real world works.

At least they're cute.
Studios: make boring conversation but do so with pretty girls. When male audience is numb, instill with subliminal messages to buy said figures.
