Hi,
Most preferred anime for me are "High School Anime" with sensitive romance and hilarious Comedy added with a Slice of Life.I really take some characters to my soul. One such character is Harima from School Rumble.

Most of them seems to enjoy watching relations such as friendship and love affairs in anime.I even tried some of the tricks used in anime to approach certain girls.

So please freely explain your feelings and emotions when you watch anime that touch your soul.

[EDIT: Changed your title to make more sense. -TK]

You first. Otherwise, I'll think this is an attempt to approach my PM box.

The first anime I saw that got me really thinking deep was Berserk. Guts was surely the most interesting main character ever conceived, very much a human being except when it comes to fighting but he's a very deep person by the fact that he has his own firm belief built from his life experience and sometimes even he gets confused from being influenced from the others.

However the real draw of the series has to be Griffith. His life is pretty much revolves around in his own ambition and that defines his character. He's not perfect like every other characters think. He is very calculating, somewhat manipulative and every now and then makes a flawed judgement. I learned from this series a lot. The main thing is how very important your own dream is. That's what makes Berserk so philosophical.

Haibane Renmei would be another one with very deep subliminal messages. From the exterior, it looks peaceful and fluffy but inside it's a very dark and mature series also posing a lot of philosophical questions. The characters in the series are all flawed but at the same time very likable.

It's often hard to fully grasp exactly what causes specific characters or stories to resonate with different people. Perhaps it's due to the viewer seeing something of themselves in the character, empathising with a character's situation or something entirely different. It's for this reason that the characters who engage me most are often quite varied by nature.

However, if I had to try categorise them I would go with:

Isolated By Power:
Examples: Lelouch (Code Geass), Light (Death Note).

These characters resonate with me when it is shown that they were once good or happy people. Something in their life has given them great power and stimulated a dark facet of their personality that has spoiler[ultimately destroyed them.] I sympathise with these characters because they represent the duality of personality that we have in all of us. It's easy to say we would not react in the same way given the same situation but it's impossible to tell... in reality, we could all be capable of such corruption.

Overconfident / Moral Supporters:
Examples: Kamina (Gurren Lagann), Hughes (FMA)

I like these characters because of the burden they carry throughout a series. At the beginning they superficially appear to be comic relief characters, but often turn out to be the only thing shielding their friends or family against great distress, pain or overwhelming despair. spoiler[These characters, sadly, often die as a result of their facade, but leave behind a legacy that spurs the rest of the characters throughout the series.]

Brave In The Face Of Adversity:
Examples: Chagum (Seirei no Moribito), Pacifica / Raquel / Shannon (Scrapped Princess)

In a situation where most people would whine, hide, complain, or otherwise give up, these characters face loss or adversity with a smile on their faces. I don't mean to suggest that people should never be upset or react to problems, but I do enjoy these sorts of characters for their realistic yet admirable handling of negative situations.

Characters Who Actually Have The Guts To Confess:
Examples: spoiler[Yurie] (Kamichu!), spoiler[Tomoya] (Clannad)

Theoretically, this could apply to any situation where a character has to take a leap of faith and try something risky, but here I am referring specifically to romance. Nothing bores me more than a 24/52 episode romance that has absolutely no resolution. It's a tease and feels almost insulting to a viewer who has sat through an entire arc. This is why I like characters who actually confess their love or ultimately end up in a real relationship by the end of a series. I understand that some writers like to retain the 'market value' of a will-they-or-won't-they couple, but I personally find it boring. It's time man/woman up!

Welcome to the NHK-I think this anime should be watched by anybody who calls themselves a hardcore anime fan or otaku. Not only is it hilarious, but it also has a lot of depth and deeper meaning as well. In addition to that it stresses the importance of relationships with people. Personally I found it somewhat motivational.

Haibane Renmei-Combines philosophical and theological elements to create a deep drama/mystery about life, friendship, spoiler[and moving on after death.] The characters also seem very real.

Rumbling Hearts-This series is huge emotional rollercoaster ride, that made me go through the whole range of emotions and connect with the characters.

Red Garden-I really enjoyed this tale about 4 highschool kids from different walks of life who were united by the death of single friend they all shared and forced to endure continued tramatic experiences as they fight to stay alive, literally. spoiler[Gradually, these girls who basically hated each other grow, mature, and change and become good friends.]

There's more but that's all I feel like writing right now.

A few that touch my soul are...

Air and Kanon-For these two series, I enjoy stories that tell heartwarming stories about family and how close the characters are to their loved ones and how much they love and care for each other. The ones that touched me the most was the mother/daughter bonds between Misuzu and Haruko and Nayuki and Akiko. I was also touched by the bond that Minagi and Michiru have.

SDF Macross and Macross Plus-I was touched by men like Roy Focker and Guld Goa Bowman, these two men, although gruff on the outside, are actually wonderful men that are caring individuals and the relationships between Roy/Claudia and Guld/Myung were equally as touching as both men were devoted to these women, although the only difference was Roy was a known playboy and Guld only loved Myung and didn't show playboy tendencies as Isamu did. spoiler[Tragedy ultimately befell these men as Roy succumbed to his injuries before he could enjoy the pinapple salad that Claudia had made for them and Guld realized he was the one who assaulted his beloved Mung after seeing her share a tender moment with Isamu in their youth and sacrifices his life in duel against the Ghost X-9 in order to let Isamu rescue Myung. ]

Neon Genesis Evangelion-I actually like the characters of Shinji and Asuka and I don't judge them based on their personalities. These two are characters that have spoiler[gone through tragedy in their pasts as young children, Shinji losing his mother Yui and being abandoned by his father Gendo and Asuka having her mother being put into a mental hospital and later seeing that her mother hung herself. These things that happened to them were quite traumatic and it scarred them throughout their lives]. It took individuals like Kaworu for Shinji and Hikari for Asuka to reach out to them and be a close friend that they could feel comfortable opening up to.

The most recent Anime that got me going was Elfin Lied. Tugged on my heart strings a bit. It was just so sad... I would choose a few points in the Anime to reference this, but I'm feeling lazy.

Otherwise it had a lot awesome blood and violence, but it just had such a touching story... with violence...

Hmm, that's a pretty random thing to ask. Personally, my whole top-20 did that (and a few more). Even if momentarily, most anime I watch will do that at some point, even Clannad (1th). "How soft is your soul?"

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is the most recent that often does that. That thing is just brilliantly done for something over 20 years old.
The reason why is the relationship between one of the main protagonists and his friend.
Major spoiler:spoiler[Unfortunately they killed Siegfried off a bit too early for my taste, and in a undramatic manner.] Since then I haven't enjoyed it as much.

I am not sure if I can really pick a theme, but there are just some characters that come across a difficult chalenge, and they make the right decision, even if they are left out.

Clannad/ After Story really touched me, there was so many characters stories, but the main story was the most powerfull. Especially with the spoiler[death of Nagisa] then with the character spoiler[Ushio] and with the ending that spoiler[Tomoya would still be willing to go for Nagisa, even if it meant all that pain.]

It is hard not to be effected by Gurren Lagann, they are stuck at the bottom, and their journey seems to be nearly impossible. But do they just stay on the bottom? No they fight their way up and fight against impossible odds, manly spirit rocks.

I think Kure-nai is one that touched my soul, it is not a big flashy show, but I love the characters. Some of the characters might have skills that are pretty superhuman, but at heart they are all human, they make mistakes, and they are flawed. And the ending though not what you would call the hapiest ever, it really fet like it had substance. After I watched it I knew that it had definetly affected me and I would like to keep the feeling for some time.

A few anime have touched my soul so to speak. Clannad After Story was a wonderful look at what would happen in real life after the typical anime ending of Clannad. I loved how they went farther to see how things played out for better or for worse. I sympathized with the characters and became a little more attached to them than I normally do with anime characters.

Kimi ni Todoke- I think I've made like 7 posts or something and I feel like 4 of them are about this show. I'm not usually a guy whose into lovey-dovey things but this just reminded me of myself so much in terms of liking someone but being so shy and not knowing what to say.

Code Geass- Just for the last episode alone. I felt like everything came together as spoiler[Nunally screamed in horror at Lelouch's death as she realized it was all for her and the crowd cheered in delight.]

I think this is a rather personal thing to ask someone. You're not just asking if something moved you as I feel alot of people have responded with that in mind but you are asking when Anime changed my life. Still I am nothing if not game so here goes ... Promise not to laugh k?

12 Kingdoms - The main character's struggle with trust that was resolved in episode 7 is something that was very relevant to my life at the time of watching. And her answer was basically mine in the end so that scene touched me right there.

MSG 00 - The scene with Setsuna running through the battlefield as a kid haunts me a bit. Though I was born in England for legal reasons I was raised in Lebanon/Kuwait and moved to England permanently only shortly before the first Gulf War. Alot of my old friends fell foul of one war or another in the region and imagining them living and dying in some kind of fucked up existence like that tears at me. Even makes me feel guilty for escaping it.

Serei No Moribito - No particular reason but I found that show to be truly moving pretty much all the way through. A real achievement.

I dont think anyone mentioned Now and then, here and there yet, for me- one of the most touching series, and features a few heartbreaking scenes.

I would be lying if I didn't declare this to be true in my case as well. It is not unreasonable to assume that certain people are averse to the appeal of these series, though the same could be said of many popular genres and storytelling techniques.

In my case, the highlights of Kanon are the conclusions to both Makoto's and Ayu's arcs, as unoriginal as such an admission may be. The sheer strength of the affect they created demonstrated how an appealing tale may be told in absence of a complex narrative or a meticulously-developed cast.

As is to be expected, one predicts that this last point of mine might not be concurred by all, but such disagreement is quite typical of the variety of personal sensitivities found amongst anime fan communities.

Kino's Journey-Something about Kino's travels through different countries and the connectedness she has the world despite her transience struck me as beautiful. Each episode is a small fantasy showing how humans affect themselves negatively and positively.

Mushishi-Another story about a traveler. A lot of the reasons this series connects with me are the same as Kino's Journey. Its use of quiet atmosphere and color palate make a relaxing experience.

Honey & Clover- While not my favorite series, I enjoyed watching each character grow emotionally through their relationships, romantic and otherwise (especially Yuta). As someone who is still in college, it certainly strikes close.
