Because of Occult Academy I ended up trying the "free trial" of crunchyroll -- and now have paid the first $11.95 monthly fee. I have to admit the high-res videos they serve up look nice.

I can afford it but I don't really want to waste my money. Can other subscribers tell me if they think it is worth it?

If you're paying $11.95, you must have a Premium Membership which gives you access to the anime and the live-action dramas. I only have the Anime membership and have for over a year now. Personally, I find it worth it to get access to simulcast shows a week early. Also, I like the idea of supporting a legit streaming site.

And, of course, when I want to impress the chicks, I just casually let it slip that I'm a CR anime member...

This is like saying a color photo is better than black and white.

I only state this because higher resolution does not equate to the $12/mo. asking price for a subscription.

For me, the price vs. what service CR delivers is not worth it. It's over-inflated. What does CR offer that's any different than other streaming websites? Nothing and they want people to pay $12/mo. for this "nothing"? Pass, thank you.

Despite my objections to the fee, this is still your call to make. Where I may not find value in service you may find tremendously valuable. Do you feel you're wasting your money?

If there's even an inkling of a "yes", ditch the program. Listen to your gut and best do it now before your wallet feels $144 lighter.

Otherwise, enjoy Haruhi 2 when it finally gets there, in high resolution to boot.

The only reason to pay $12/mo is if you want to watch the live action dramas as well as the anime. If you just want the anime, then you should get the $7/mo membership.

Since I couldn't care less about Japanese live action dramas, I'm paying $7/month and enjoying my high res, no ads anime. Smile

No it's not, because all you have to do is wait a week and the episode streams free for everyone and you don't have to pay a cent.

Granted I have an anime subsrciption, but I watch a fair amount of their animes to self justify it. I keep up with Heroman, Occult, Naruto, Bleach, Giant Killing and at the time durara and I wanted to finish the rest of Eyeshield 21 which had a few episodes locked behind the subscription account. So I spend $.30 or so an episode to watch anime an hour after it's released in Japan and a week before free memberships. Even less when I was finishing Eyeshield 21.

But if all your watching is like Occult and maybe 1 other series, then it might not be wrote it since you only need to wait a week for the next episode. BUT if you feel you'll then turn on to fansubs or stream rips because you can't wait, then its nice your supporting legal streams and if you really enjoy the series, then its worth it.

But yeah, that's the full access pass you have so unless your watching dramas as well, then your spending too much.

What CR is offering is 'legality', surely? The warm fuzzy feeling that you get to watch new shows quickly, without being a thief. Legit streaming sites such as CR deserve as much support as possible.

Having said that, just wait a week and you can see episodes for free on CR. So unless you really are of the ZOMG MUST WATCH NAO!!1 persuasion, I wouldn't bother with a subscription.

I don't get the warm fuzzies just because I got something quicker than the other guy. Stealing or not stealing is a different dilemma than waiting for free CR subs or paying for a membership just to get the newer anime faster and a higher res. Since that is the actual question, then to me the CR sub is not worth it.

At one point I thought about subscribing too, but after really thinking it through I concluded that it wasn't worth the money. The thing that really made me not subscribe was the lack of anime that I cared about. Although there are a few titles that I enjoy watching it isn't enough to get me to pay them. Taking a quick look through what they have I see maybe 20% of their titles as something that I actually want to watch.

On top of that the whole "Pay extra for simulcast" thing doesn't make any since to me when just a week later it'll be up for free. And the idea of paying to not have adds seems pointless too. Really I don't mind a few adds, it's basically like watching tv and there's nothing wrong with that.

Over all I would just say that it's not worth the cash. I would rather buy a new manga or dvd with that money. But if, down the road, they get better shows and give the members better benefits I'd consider paying my dues. Until that day comes I'll just use their free videos and watch the adds.

Basically it comes down to whether you feel any of the simulcasts currently running are worth paying that much money for the increased quality and no ads. If not, then just have a binge on their back catalogue during the next month and then cancel.

I've been an anime member there since they started the subscription service in Jan of 2009. Personally I do think its worth it. $6.00 a month in the grand scheme of things is really nothing if you think about it, I mean that's the same cost as a combo from Mc donalds. So for the same cost as one cheap meal I get a month's worth of simulcasts plus a pretty large catalog of anime, as well as it being in either 480 or 720p, no commercials, and I'm also doing my small part to help the industry. Each season they have at least 1 simulcast that I'm a fan of (usually 3-4) and now they have Bleach in hi res so its def. worth it to me.

$7.00 a month is rather cheap, don't you think? Especially when you consider that when the anime DVD's come out, for like, 4 episodes, they go for almost $40 a pop?

If I had a credit card (or a job, for that matter--damn city and it's lack of employment opportunities) i'd definitely sign up (so that my anime procurement was a bit more... shall we say, 'legitimate').

batou makes a good point. Crunchyroll is great for those of you who follow anime like Naruto, Bleach, Reborn, etc.

For those of us who want to watch anime like Eureka Seven, it is in 4:3 and subpar quality. I'd be better off buying the DVD's off of Amazon and actually enjoying the show.

That's a good point. If you are someone who likes to watch those seemingly endless shows and likes to keep up to date with the new episodes, it's perfectly reasonable. I mean buying the dvds for something like Bleach or Naruto will cost a small fortune when it's all said and done. So in those situations crunchyroll is the easiest and cheapest way to support these series.

However if your anime of choice isn't a series that's hundreds of episodes long then you might as well just get the box sets or something.
