I know someone who loves "creepy kid" horror movies. Thought this show might be up their alley, but they have never seen an anime show before.

What kind of content should they expect to see in this anime?

Anything that might make it worse or weirder than any other horror/slasher flick?

No bizarre sexual content or other oddities someone might be shocked by?

I know asking for some of this type of info might seem off but I am NOT into this kind of horror movie type stuff and well... moe-esque japanese shows sometimes cross some odd lines.

Update: Recommendation Q removed. Sorry.

Hmm ok I will simply answer each question in turn as best I can ok Smile ? I am going to do my best to keep this as light as possible spoiler wise but I will mark my answers spoiler in case anyone objects.

What kind of content should they expect to see in this anime?

spoiler[There are several "arcs" each arc starts with peaceful slice of life style storytelling. Things get dark fast though and eventually lots of people die in very gruesome ways. There is a high psychological aspect to both the motives and the kills. The horror aspect of the show will not dissapoint you.

spoiler[It's a bit hard to explain but When they Cry has a special psychological quality to it's killing. I can't really give you an example without giving you spoilers. But it's enough to seperate it from standard fare.]

No bizarre sexual content or other oddities someone might be shocked by?

spoiler[There is nothing disturbing like rape or pedo. If that's what you mean. Sometimes in the arcs early stages the characters get dressed up to look nice. Also some strange "and rather funny I think" sexual humor takes place. This quickly gives way to the horror. Don't worry this is certainly not something the show focus's on.

So it sounds like a solid recommendation then, based on what you are telling me, even though this co-worker of mine has never seen Japanese animation before. Thanks for all the info. Appreciate it a lot.

You can go by the genre. You can expect kids spoiler[killing each other.]

Yes. What I just said. It's much more profound, and meaningful than any other horror I've watched though. Perhaps I'm missing out on other horror stuff?

The killing methods are rather violent ones; usually madness driven. There's no sexual content as far as I can tell. At least none involved with violence; that I guarantee. I'd say the worse scene was when one of the girls consecutively spoiler[stabbed her own neck with a kitchen knife] (but there's a reason to it, though).

I didn't consider the anime that horrific. In time you'll find yourself caring for the characters (or so I believe). It's about mystery above all else.

First ask your friend if he doesn't mind kids being brutally murdered. If not go ahead. The series only concludes at season 2, and completely wrap up on the last OVA.

Major ending spoiler (for the whole franchise); somewhat reassuring: spoiler[they do live happily afterwards.]

You can find some other horror recommendations here (asking for recommendations isn't allowed at the moment). You could try the newest horror, Shiki (which isn't on that list). It's being streamed by Funimation for free I believe.

The presence of "Moe" characters in the show can't really be deneid but don't worry even if you're friend gets annoyed by this the cutesy stuff never lasts long. In fact this is the shows charm. The characters aren't like other horror kids which creep you out from minute 1. They are genuinely sweet ... to start with.

There's an spoiler[incredibly violent and sadistic torture scene of a young girl] that would probabally disturb some people a whole lot.

The two TV seasons were pretty violent, but tame on the sexual side, although there were some sexual jokes involving minors that some may find to be in bad taste.

The OAVs (Higurashi no Naku Koroni Rei) contained at least one episode that went a bit overboard with the lolicon imho (still no actual sex or nudity, but just the camera angles on 10 year olds in bathing suits coupled with the comments of the characters.. brrr) , and that caused me to stop watching. Luckily, the OAVs aren't at all necessary to appreciate the rest of the story.
