Hmm... If it's going to cost me $20, I don't see much of a reason to upgrade, if the only difference is the dub and improved subs...

Which begs the question- what was wrong with the subs to begin with? I did notice a few typos, but nothing too big. The only thing I was annoyed by was how the subs showed Fuko talking in first person when she was really talking in third person- and I wouldn't have even noticed that if I hadn't played the game beforehand.

Upon reading "Shelley Calene-Black" for Kyou, my reaction was a booming "HOLY SHIT!" followed by a fit of laughter. I am pleased. Cool

Honestly, this is lookin' to be one of the best casts I've seen in quite a while. Seriously looking forward to it. Very Happy I'm already gonna watch it On Demand, but I'm gonna head out and buy the DVDs when they're released as well.

You and me both. I was desperately hoping that Shelley was involved in this somehow.

Looking forward to the dub; glad that they decided to do one. Can't say I'm happy about the upgrade deal, because it's not really a deal.

I'm taking this strictly from a mathematical perspective. @46% off, the dubbed Clannad set would be $37.79, and you wouldn't have to ship anything back. Thus, there's no reason to take advantage of option 2 (unless no Section 23 sale comes any time soon, and you're extremely impatient) because you'd be losing money.

Option 1 is $14.79 cheaper than buying it fresh, and that's not including shipping costs to send it there. I'd be willing to bet you could sell your subbed sets for more. If you don't want to go to that hassle, and it is easier to send them back instead of selling them, this would be the only option I would consider. Though after ~$3 sending it back, paying ~$12 to keep the subbed sets is what I would do.

Now it's nice that they're offering to do this because they didn't need to (great PR btw). Just you need to realize that mathematically you're getting the short end of the stick. I'd recommend to buy the dubbed set, then resell the subbed sets on your own. If I can sell them for ~$15 each, then the dubbed set would only be ~$8 more, instead of $23.

The number of typos and bad grammar per episode is quite high in season 1. Season 2 is the opposite.

Not that I really care about Clannad, but I don't think I've ever heard of most of those VAs.

decisions decisions. has there been any confirmation that the subtitles have been corrected, or are people just assuming that?

It has been confirmed by David Williams that the subtitles will be reviewed.

Per episode? It was really that bad? I need to pay better attention from now on- I've only watched it on the DVDs, and I didn't notice that many problems. Anime hyper

If Section23 did it right the first time around there would be no need for this. The finish product should be free of defects, typos, and the right voice actors for each characters. The fans/customers should walk away from the cash register or an online purchase with a smile knowing they bought the best of the best anime dvds released.

Section23 (previously was ADV), VIZ, Bandai, and Funimation have been in the American anime market long enough that the issues from above should have been addressed years ago and the products today should be at least perfect without mistakes.

As a buyer I don't want to buy crappy anime dvds with errors in them since it they are costly and money should not be wasted on poor products.

These are a bunch of old ADV stables, and some of their newer actors of the past few years. Some of these voice actors haven't been in much, so it's understandble you haven't heard of them. Others have been active for years though...it's a nice mix of new voices and great veterans.

While you're right, it's important to think about where the company was recently. They'd just had most of their finacial backing and about a year's worth of licenses taken away. Then, after barely surviving by essentially breaking up into smaller companies and more or less ceasing to exist as ADV on paper, they managed to get just enough backing to license some new shows.

They then likely cut as many corners and costs as they could (hence why it was all sub-only at first) just to put something out. They still aren't doing super since they need outside funding even to do what they are doing now. Some of the current theory on these dubs is that companies in other English speaking countries partially financied these for better licensing deals on their end.

In other words, it's quite possible that we're only getting a Clannad dub because fans in another country also wanted an English dub.

Section23 is currently doing better than just surviving but they aren't back where they were when they were ADV and probably never will be. Fewer consumers, rising costs (corporate taxes and property taxes are up folks.) and a constant demand for faster and cheaper means sometimes the companies will just say "screw it, we don't have time to proofread everything."

It sucks but so does life. Deal with it or don't, but unless you can convince a few thousand more people to buy anime DVDs, it won't change a thing. Frankly, I think it's great they take the time to try and fix the errors from the first time around instead of just avoiding the extra work. I'm happy to get what little I can nowadays.

This list makes me happy, since I don't think several of these VA, particularly Hilary Haag, had been doing much anime work since ADV stopped dubbing.

I actually IMAGINED Greg Ayres might be Sunohara, but I had only thought of that because of how similar the character is to his character from Kanon.
