Well, yeah, March '97-September '08 is only 11 1/2 years, but it was on tv during 12 different calender years, which is probably what they mean...

Short but interesting. I do wish they would have touched on why they decided to replace Moltar, though. TOMs 1-3 were OK, but Moltar was always my favorite Toonami host. I always assumed it was because they wanted a "Toonami only" character, rather than a character connected to a specific series (Space Ghost), but still, I would have liked to know for sure. Oh well.

Here's an interview with DeMarco on ToonamiFan.com. Scroll down & you'll see it was Mike Lazzo's idea for Moltar. Lazzo was involved with Space Ghost Coast to Coast at the time. It was probably Akins' & DeMarco's idea to change from Ghost Planet Industries & Moltar to the Absolution & TOM. Edited to add: The same author had an interview ready with Akins, but it wasn't posted before Toonami's end. He's trying to do a follow-up ASAP, which will be added to the original interview when it's posted. |

That is it. They wanted a character uniquely associated with their Toonami brand. Plus, they don't want any confusion about their Toonami brand vs any show or Adult Swim. (BTW, I knew someone from BAAF who went to Erie Univ to study Japanese, I think. Must be a nice place to go there.) |

Nice interview, wish had been longer so they could have talked in detail about a few more things. Still hard to believe its gone, but it was good while it lasted.

I have a feeling that's all they could/would say. If they weren't at CN any longer, they would be freer to say what they really think of this decision (and who knows, maybe they agree with it, we can't assume we know what they think). But I felt like they were holding themselves back a lot, e.g. when talking about killing TOM 1 (grr), or ending the block, which they don't try to explain. Plus they don't talk about the move from TOM 2 to TOM 3, and one could point out that this was not intended to be an exhaustive interview/documentary. but then again one could also be suspicious of what they really thought of decisions that were handed down from above. To me, each TOM (and Sara) felt less genuine than the previous one. Moltar and TOM 1 were genuinely what Lazzo and then Akins/DeMarco wanted to do; TOM 2 felt like they were trying to be more "extreme" and "in your face", and TOM 3... do I really need to address TOM 3? Sara(h?) was once a shadowy but demure womanly face on a screen, then she was a generic 3D animé girl. Any of these things could have been the fault of these guys, or they might have been the result of executives who didn't get what they were trying to do, or how to speak to kids/teens. |

When I was watching Toonami at the time, I didn't really try to question all that stuff...
I was excited, my shows were coming on. Even now, I don't think I'll try to analyze the concept of Tom and Sarah too much. |

TT. I was too young to remember Toonami much. I was about four when it was at it's prime, I think. I loved it though. This is wishful thinking, but I have an idea. One that is completely out of our hands, save for complaining to the network. I'm pretty sure Adult Swim was born from Toonami midnight run. Now think of how the ratings have got to be more on Adult Swim out of all CN by now. I mean, why did they make it an hour earlier. The way I see it, Adult Swim will take over more as the rest of CN becomes less and less popular. Soon, it might extend towards prime time, becoming more than something considered for adults. Anime on american tv is probably most popular on AS, and as we all know, they've been showing hints of new anime being aired. Toonami probably won't ever come back, but I think there's some executive, some director, maybe just some lowly intern, that wants something like this to happen. If this happens, it opens up an opportunity for more timeslots used for anime. Not very likely, but good theory, if anything.
