I had an opportunity to go this year and chose to wait until next year due to a lack of money. Excuse me while I kick myself.

'the auteur animator who created 2003's Winter Days' is rather strange wording; it would be clearer to say 'the auteur animator who created a segment of 2003's Winter Days and the video for Dir en grey's "Agitated Screams of Maggots"' (which I suspect readers of this site are probably at least as likely to know him from, though being a promo video it's not in the database). Also worth mentioning the official Web site for Midori-ko, which other than the index has English translations below the Japanese.

To be perfectly honest, my priority at this year's Animation Fest is going to be seeing Sylvain Chomet's The Illusionist before I see any of the Japanese anime films, and this is coming from someone who didn't even like Chomet's previous film, The Triplets of Belleville, all that much.
The Illusionist's trailers don't have any of that weird grotesque imagery that I didn't care for in Triplets of Belleville, the story looks to be more down to Earth slice-of-life, the way that various classic cars were drawn impressed me with their detail, and the plain-looking girl reminds me weirdly of Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga from Azumanga Daioh drawn in a completely different style. |
