While at work today, I randomly asked a fellow colleague about an anime image. That image was actually the anime character on ANN's skin(the girl from Sands of Destruction). He rapidly replied "Dragon Ball"; after that I couldn't stop laughing at him. Once I could contain myself, I asked him about what it was, but he stayed silent. After, I asked him about where it's from, and I even mentioned that Dragon Ball was also made in the same country. And again, he stayed mute. Needless to say, that was a funny experiment and I carried it out with a few more colleagues, two of them were female. None of them gave any sort of satisfactory reply, but one of them said that it was kind of interesting, and asked me for more information about it. I, of course, told her what she wanted to know and where to find it, as a reward for participating my experiments.
I'll do the same to some of my friends whenever I feel like it, and have time to. What got me even more curious was how I've never met anyone who knows about anime, but who doesn't actually watch it. So, how about you? Do your friends, family, etc. know anime, and what do they think about it? Do they like it? Did you get them to watch it, or did they get you to watch it? Did you ever force anyone to watch anime, and did it actually get the person to like it? As for me, the only choice I can reply for is "friends". A friend who recommended anime a few years back. Back then I was currently distanced from anime, but while I didn't know that anime was called anime, I did know about it's existence. |

I have many friends who I got to like specific shows, like a forced Sailor Moon marathon, which was enjoyable until episode 25
 .
Another time I subjected a group of females to School Rumble, where one of the girls really dug it, the other one was indiferent, and the third girl complained about how cartoons are for little kids, which bothered me. She didn't even give it the benifit of the doubt, it peeved me that she didn't even watch an episode before making an assumption. If you want to dislike a show then dislike a show for it's merits, not because they are "cartoon people." My father is tolerant, living in a house with myself and my evergrowing anime collection, which is taking a bit more than a small bookcase worth of space. He mumbles about it being stupid and how I'm wasting my money, but he recognizes it's my money from my job, and that teenagers are going to spend their money on something. He almost watched two episodes of Gunslinger Girl, but he just kept watching the opening song and gave it back to me. If I ever get something more manly, I may toss it his way. I had a friend who drug me (dragged me?) to her house to watch Azumanga Daioh, which I loved. I wasn't aware anime had a name at that point, I thought it was just a cool TV show. She never even told me it was an anime. I just did a google search on the name and of course I got anime overload. And then I saw a clip from Sailor Moon, remembered my childhood, and, well, I became a general nuisance on forum society.

Are you surprised that barely anyone knows about our hobby ? It's hilarious when people think anime is mainstream. It's rare to meet anyone one else that know what we know.
Did you get a kick out of people not knowing Morte Asherah? I'm sure you are the weird one in their eyes. |

Never, even once, did I mention the word "surprise" on the thread's opener. And to answer your question, no, I am not. Furthermore, I was surprised my colleague even knew about Dragon Ball. Besides, I'm not asking about anime's popularity, but mostly about what people close to you think of anime, or if they even know the meaning of it.

There were brief times where my cousin and younger brother were into anime with my cousin into Naruto and brother into DBZ during my early anime fandom days. I was also able to get my brother to enjoy Love Hina during one of my winter breaks in college when I showed the anime to him. I even showed Grave of the Fireflies and FLCL to one of my old high school friends where he enjoyed both titles around that time. My mother, who was starting to catch on to my interest, winded up getting me a hentai title by mistake when she started buying DVDs of anime for me.
Nowadays though, those I know don't pay as much attention to anime. My mother takes notice of anime box sets and movies I get in the mail and the subject does often pop up in conversation with those I talk to. But beyond that, they just accept it as something I have interest in and nothing more beyond that point. |

My family always points out to me that anime are just for kids. So yea, im kinda irritated by it for some time now. And would like to show them some mature rated anime. and let them judge it if its for "kids only" or not.

Well i got off kinda lucky with my girl friend. She doesn't mind anime although she doesn't watch it herself. She does however enjoy watching some movies with me (mainly Miyazaki) but hey, a win is a win.
As far as friends and family, well i tend to get the same response: "why are you still watching cartoons?". Ill sometimes get a friend or two hooked on a show (notable mentions: rurouni kenshin, darker than black, death note) but those are far and few between. At least they tolerate it. |

My sister and I are close, so we both are anime fans although we have slightly different tastes. Both of my parents like Miyazaki films and will watch a couple of episodes of a series with us when they want to(My mom particularly enjoyed Kino's Journey and Witch Hunter Robin). Essentially, my family doesn't really
mind. I did try to get my neighbor into anime by showing him FullMetal Alchemist. He seemed interested in it for a while, but it eventually waned. As for friends, I can't comment. |

My love for anime has been a long and winding road and has met with both support and opposition. My family has grown to love some anime such as anything from Hayao Miyazaki such as My Neighbor Totoro and Grave Of The Fireflies has been called by my own mum to be one of the greatest films she has ever seen, she personally also enjoys Tokyo Godfathers.
My significant other is an anime fan as well but her tastes are more picky than mine because she prefers Japanese dramas. Most people find my passion of anime to be somehing to be admired because they say they don't meet a lot of people who have a passion for something like I do and for as long as I have. |

Meh all my friends are animation prejudiced these days. When I was in university I used to enjoy sitting down with my housemates and marathoning a series. Now im lucky if I can get my friends to even watch an episode or two.
My friend described it as having a "certain tolerance for animated material" He says he can watch a bit but too much animated stuff and he just loses interest. I guess us Anime fans must be born with this turned off or something. I try to get them to realise that it really dousn't matter if something is animated or not in the end it's all a story. But I don't hold out much hope of it working. There is one guy amongst my mates who likes Anime but he is still in the Bleach,Naruto,DBZ phase and is therefore almost as hard to talk to about Anime that I like as the guy who hates the damn stuff. Well ... at least we both like Gurren Lagann. |

I kind of enjoy not having everyone I know love anime, it provides me with some alone time. I actually became an anime fan because of an ex-girlfriend I was living with. She would not leave me alone except when I received an anime DVD from Netflix and since she hated anime, I could escape from her for a little while. However, I have also enjoyed the perks of being an anime fan; Elfen Lied actually got me laid. After a date, a girl came back to my apartment and saw Elfen Lied sitting on my couch, which I had purchased that afternoon. She insisted on watching it and enjoyed it so much she came back the next night to watch it, which was good for me.

My family and friends know about anime, they've all seen it at least once in their life. However, I wouldn't say they share the same enthusiasm as I do since they refer it as "cartoon for kids". But all in all, they think it's OK as long as I don't force them to watch any.
I've kind of got my little sister into it, at least for a short period of time. She watched a few episodes of anime such as Naruto, Soul Eater and Code Geass, but I don't think she got hooked really. My big sister just laughs at me. I remember once she said that when I'm going to give birth to a baby later in life, it will pop out and say "Anime!". She thought it was hilarious, but it really wasn't.. I also got my boyfriend to watch Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi and he thought it was good, which was a bit odd since he still thinks I'm a bit of an anime-nerd ^^ And as for how I got addicted to anime, I think it's always been inside me, just sleeping, waiting for the right moment to wake up haha. I mean, I've always enjoyed watching cartoons since I was a child and I think it started when Pokémon came and when I was 16, when my English was starting to improve a lot, I just got hooked. I will probably continue to watch anime in the future as well. |

Most people do not know about anime. When I have a certain anime image on my desktop at work I'll get comments asking what it is, or funny looks. Or, if someone does know about anime, they consider it a geek obsession....which I suppose is true to a certain extent
My husband tolerates my obsession, but he doesn't care to watch it. He did watch all of Full Metal Alchemist and REALLY enjoyed it, but we had to watch it dubbed since he hates subtitles. I prefer to watch my anime subtitled so it was a sacrifice I made just so he would actually watch a series with me. I also bought Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo in hopes he would watch them with me as well but he just hasn't been in the mood to. We made it through about 4 episodes of Cowboy bebop together and a couple episodes of Samurai Champloo but he just wasn't into it, so I guess I'll be finishing it up on my own. I hear it's one of the best though so as soon as I have some spare time I'm finally going to watch the rest of it. We fans are in the minority for sure. But it's ok. I am fully comfortable in my geekdom. |

Not because he didn't know that it was anime(I never actually expected him to say the anime's name, unlike you think), but exactly because he said it was Dragon Ball. Now, don't get me wrong, like I said, he's a colleague, and I treat all my colleagues friendly and am always pulling a joke here and there just for a better mood. He seemed quite interested though, I might recommend a few titles which he could see with his family(he's around 35, has a wife and 2-3 kids); not sure what to actually recommend(need to find out what age his kids are)), but I was thinking about anime movies made for kids(obviously). But, well, if you want to see others laughing, go ahead and try out Paranoia Agent! |
