This column made me depressed. I didn't even know there was a Ugly Yet Beautiful manga.

Honestly, Gainax needs to stick to milking the EVA cow.

What?! A pirate story that doesn't even mention Somalia?

I lol'd.

As for the evidence against, I think the 'linear challenge-win' format is what made me really like reading it. Though I am a big dragon ball fan, so I may just be a sucker for heroes winning big fights that get cooler and cooler, even if they are a bit predictable.

I didn't know Viz went the big route with OP. They didn't seem very certain about it on the AOD forums. Oh, and I agree that Phoenix 5 is one of the better ones in the series, which is why I'm so pissed that the tv show effed up the story-line.

Yay for a Viz Big edition. I do wish they'd just release a boxset for One Piece.

Just to clear things up, it's not a VizBig edition of One Piece. AFAIK, it's the size of a regular volume of manga and the paper is thinner too. Definitely not the characteristics of the VizBig line.

I guess ignorance could be a blessing in disguise then, because watching the TV series without any knowledge of the manga did not give me the impression that the story had been "messed up" or anything along those lines. Perhaps the changes and omissions make it a bad adaptation but I didn't feel it was a bad show.

I actually saw the recent series first, then got a hold of most of the manga (before that, I only had volume 3 which I found at random somewhere, but neither Space nor Yamato were in the recent series anyway). After I read the Resurrection manga, I just could not watch that segment of the anime any longer. I think the rest of the adaptations were fine, but Resurrection...well, just read the manga to see for yourself why the anime was no comparison on this one. I think the most accurate adaptation was "Strange Beings", which was practically scene for scene with the manga.
Ignorance is bliss, but if you liked the recent Phoenix anime, do yourself a favor and at least pick up volume 5 (and 4 just because), it's a much different experience.

I also saw the newer series but I didn't get too far into it because after I saw volume 4, I just lost interest. Anyway, thanks for the heads up maybe I will read the resurrection manga.

With the omnibus verison of One Piece, I'll be able to save a lot of money getting it that way. The grade for it is good, but I would give it a B+ for not being like any other shonen title out there, with an unquie sense of art and pretty good humor.

Re Alive: what I want to know is, why does it look like they're setting up a wedding on the cover? A girl in a white dress in (what looks like) a church? Huh?
----------
Who but Tokyopop would release a manga adaptation of a mediocre (that's being generous) anime that fizzled out years ago? Way to get yourselves out of the hole, guys! Razz
-------------
I prefer animation to live action myself, that's why I like this site so much. Wink But you can't go wrong adapting Urasawa to live action. *waits for news about a Pluto trilogy*

Oh, and I'd love to see "Dr. House vs. Black Jack: The movie" ! Hey, Dective Conan met Lupin, so anything can happen! Wink

I liked the rating for One Piece, a B rating is good to see on a manga that everyone calls "stupid" or "boring." I LOL'd about the whole "What?! A pirate story that doesn't even mention Somalia?"; that was a good one. xD

Although I didn't agree with the whole "it's like Oda is trying to stall the OP fans with all of his random crap" something-or-other; honestly, the randomness is one of the reasons I got into OP. That and I just love pirates.

...and then there's the whole "I'm madly in love with Sanji" thing...^////^;;

Just a question about the VizBig One Piece deal: so, if I have my facts straight, Viz is going to be doing these VizBigs and trying to release the One Piece manga to catch up with the Japanese serialization?

Seems like quite a lot of shelf space Viz is trying to conquer, taking into consideration that, for example, my Borders only has about 3 shelf's of manga in the whole store.
