Hmmm, not really sold on Black Star's voice in the Soul Eater clip. Some actresses can doing boyish voices like he should have, but Karbowski's take is too far on the girlish side. The Japanese version was already too high in my opinion, but FUNi let it go a step over the edge.

Well I understand what you mean but personally I don't think it's all that bad. Being a fan of the series I'm willing to over look it, besides I'm sure Black star's voice will grow on everyone.

Same feelings. Black Star sounds far too feminine in the English dub. Then again, he doesn't come across nearly as irritating as he did in the Japanese dub, so it isn't all bad.

Black Star's voice may have just sounded extra-girly because he was whispering for most of the clip. His shouting voice sounds a lot like the Japanese version to me. Tsubaki sounded more annoyed than usual, though...

Is it just me, or does anyone else suddenly want to try using "You silver-haired son of a locksmith" as an insult? That's the tone of voice I imagined it in for some reason.

Oh FUNimation, what has happened to your dubs as of late?
Ever since they've started licensing everything under the sun and pumping out 13 ep DVD sets every couple of months, everything has just dropped drastically, from the quality of their dubs to their actual video quality on releases.
Black Star's voice is just a disaster. He's supposed to be an arrogant, annoying, loud, yet badass punk.
Compare the scene here to the Japanese and it's like night and day. The Japanese makes him sound like a badass assassin, which misleads you since he's actually useless as an assassin. In this dub he sounds like an inexperienced little girl, lacking confidence.
Tsubaki isn't too bad, but it's your typical Monica Rial performance, lifeless, and sounding like every other role she has ever played.
Also don't like how they're handling certain naming terms.
They're keeping Kishin rather than Demon God, using Lord Death rather than Grim Reaper or the original Shinigami-sama...
To start with, Lord Death won't make sense since later in the series, Kid finds his fathers signature on one of the Demonic Tools, 'Death'. He then thinks for a second and makes the connection, 'Death' = Shinigami-sama, since he is never called 'Death' by anyone. Now the correct way to handle this would be to adapt the name as 'Grim Reaper', since 'Death' would be another name for that term, and the character is clearly based on the western interperation of Death, the Grim Reaper.
This would also be more consistant as Kid also gets called a 'Shinigami' by certain characters, meaning they could translate that as 'Reaper', since the lack of honorific means the term 'Shinigami-sama' would be exclusive to that particular character, avoiding conflict. How they will handle this in the dub I don't know.
Gah... hugely let down by this doesn't even begin to explain my feeling on this adaption...

actually when screaming "yahoo" etc. Black Star sounds almost exactly like in the Japanese dub. I'm only really missing his lisp ... that was so funny in Japanese.

It makes perfect sense. Shinigami = Death, Shinigami-sama = Lord Death. It depends on which person uses the name. He himself is just "Death", but others will because of politeness add a "Lord/sama".
Btw, the spoken language in the story of Soul Eater is not necessarily Japanese. The series is set in America, the fictional "Death City" is located in Nevada. So actually I dunno why they kept "Kishin" in fact xD
Therefore

Yes, he is - only not in the Japanese language version

He is like "Death Jr.", i.e. "Death, the Kid". His name is "Death" just like his father's, but in order not to confuse them he is called "Kid", i.e. "Junior"
In the anime, episode 30, he also shows his "Identity Card" which has written "Death" on it. Especially in the US it's not so uncommon for the son to have the same name as his father and then get called Junior, is it? ^^

God damn it, Japan just give us a Saru Lock anime already. Same with Otomen. If people like the drama, there's a HUGE chance they'll like the anime.

I read some of the Saru Lock manga. Pretty damn good. I wish they would do an anime series.

Maybe if Blackstar had a little more of a raspy voice he would sound like a guy, but he just sounds like a chick to me.

Though the performance of the dub was very close, as long as I can turn the dub "OFF" I'm all about this series.
Gimme, Gimme.

Yes, he is - only not in the Japanese language version |
The problem is that Shinigami can be translated as various terms;
Reaper, Death God, God of Death, Soul Reaper (Bleach) etc.
The question here is finding the correct term for the best translation.
In this case it wouldn't be Death, as although he clearly is Death, he is named by two variants; Shinigami-sama (dialogue), Death (signature).
This is where my comment comes from regarding Kid taking a moment to realize the 'Death' signature is infact his fathers, Shinigami-sama.
If the mangaka wanted Shinigami-sama to be called Death, much like Kids name, Death the Kid, he would be called Death-sama.
He isn't though, so you need to come up with the correct way to properly represent this for the dub. The best method would be to replace 'Shinigami-sama' with 'Grim Reaper', as you keep the two variants while also remaining faithful, since the character is clearly based on the western image of Death, aka the Grim Reaper.
You then also avoid the problem of when characters call Kid 'Shinigami', as you could replace that with 'Reaper'. Instead, how will this be handled now? They can't call him Death (Shinigami = Death right?). Will they call him 'Junior'? lol
You get my point now?
I understand where you were coming from, and to be honest, there is no right and wrong, since you are taking in this case a Japanese word that can be translated as a variety of things in English, but it's just a question of a poor selection.
Saying that, this is nothing new for FUNi, since they often take great liberty with their dubs, straying from the original script.

While I'll agree Brittney sounds too girlish for this clip, I think they still are working on the dub. If they are, I suspect she is working on making the voice more boyish. I suspect Brittney wants to get it as masculine as possible but she can only adjust her voice so much. Funimation strives on many of their titles to stay true to the spirit and intent of the subbed version. This includes questionable voice casting that use a bad voice for a character one time but improve the voice for the same character another.
