Recently I bought the Japanese DVD of Ponyo (Gake No Ue No Ponyo), which includes English subtitles. I don't care about dubs, but my understanding of Japanese is not at all good enough to do without subtitles. This Japanese DVD with subtitles was a nice opportunity for me to own the movie before it was even out of theaters in America and Europe.

So I was wondering if there are more anime available with Japanese audio and English subtitles that I didn't know about. There are quite a few anime that I would like to own that don't stand much of a chance of being released in N-America, Europe or Australia. But apparently it's not impossible for Japanese releases to have English subtitles. I seem to recall that some Asian releases include English subtitles as well.

How would I go about finding out about such DVDs? I found Ponyo on CDJapan just by accident. Are there sites/shops out there that specialize in such DVDs? Or at least indicate the availability of English subtitles in a way I can understand (I can put Chinese text through Google's translator, but I don't really trust the accuracy of that)?

If anyone has experience in this matter, is the quality of translation comparable to that of releases for English-speaking markets? And what about the risk of buying bootlegs?

This is sort of a question I've been pondering as well, due to recently acquiring a region-free DVD player. Any kind of guidance about how to spot a potential bootleg on a site like yesasia.com would be greatly appreciated. i made two purchases there a few weeks back, and I'm about 99% sure I succeeded in not purchasing bootlegs... but I also know one has to be careful with yesasia.

Is this a legit release? If it has Chinese subs as well, it's an automatic bootleg.

It mentions "subtitled" on the Ponyo R2 DVD on Amazon, but I don't think it says for what language the subtitles are.

You fail. Learn more about R2 and R3 DVD with English audio/subtitles here.

YesAsia has it as well.

Hmm, that list of R2/R3 DVDs doesn't work it seems. It redirects me to the mania.com front page. Confused

Well, all I know is that I have NEVER seen a legit release with Japanese, Chinese, AND English in it. Ponyo just might be the first exception. I just know I have seen WAY too many Miyazaki bootlegs.

The DVD I have has only Japanese and English subtitles on it. It's definitely the real thing though. A bootlegger wouldn't produce discs and box of this quality, with all the trademarks, release number, barcode and what have you on it. The release code is VWDZ8126 in case you want to look it up.

I think all Studio Ghibli's movies are available with English subtitles in Japan.

It works fine on my both browsers (Firefox 3.0.15 and MSIE 8.0.6001.18702).

Not just Ponyo; all R3TW and R3HK DVD from Ghibli meet your criteria above. Visit GhibliWiki (formerly known as Nausicaa.net) for more info.

Do you have to be a Mania.com member or something to see the list? I tried both Firefox and Lynx, but I get redirected to the frontpage with both. Can you actually see this page? Arrow http://www.animeondvd.com/discdata/subdublist.php

Oops, sorry, I didn't know you meant the link within Chris Beveridge's post. You are right; they are no longer accessible ever since AnimeOnDVD has become part of Mania.com (sigh). Anime cry I just sent a PM to let him know and fix the links.

Ah I see. I thought maybe I was missing something obvious.

I hope Chris Beveridge has the data saved somewhere. I couldn't find a recent cached version of that page.
