So not only does K-On get to lose it's title to Bakemonogatari (which I think has been an infinitely more interesting show based on what I've seen of it so far), but it also gets to take a seat for at least a week to a Gundam production which is really just a compilation of the first series episodes for at least this week. Interesting and humbling week for that show.

Well, Gundam 00's success doesn't amaze me. After all, if there's one type of Anime that still outsells Ecchi, Moe and Lolicon it is Mecha, the good old fashioned Anime standby.
But yeah, great to see Bakemonogatari up where it belongs. Of course, I'd rather have seen it in second spot behind the masterpiece that is Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 . . .

I'd say it's more humbling to those who decry anime is going down the drain just because K-On is popular. As if buying K-On prevents people from buying other titles Anyways just look at the whole list -- this just proves that there's room for everyone. I mean c'mon: Bakemonogatari, Gundam, K-On, FMA2, East of Eden, Bounen no Xamdou, Queen's Blade are all sharing the spotlight so to speak.

If I have thirty dollars in my pocket (enough for one DVD), and I want to buy both K-ON DVD 4 and Eden of the East DVD 4, then I have to make a choice. I don't know if anyone ever told you this, but you usually cannot buy two new DVDs for the price of one. Therefore, because of scarcity of money consumers have to make the aforementioned choice, and have to incur an opportunity cost, (i.e. the price of giving up the next-best alternative).
There, you just got an impromptu economics lesson.

Nothing was implied in his statement about how many you could afford to buy. And the fact that K-On is available for purchase has no bearing on your buying Eden of the East or any other title. That's the choice you have. Just to clarify the economics lesson...
The point is that shows are being made and are selling successfully from across all genres. Moe isn't even getting the bulk of sales. This complaint that moe is ruining anime then seemingly doesn't hold water in terms of actual sales.

None of which applies to the actually situation where many otaku (including myself) are, in fact buying multiple BDs. Keep in mind that the primary market for anime in Japan is young, single adult otaku who tend to have significant disposable income. Certainly, it's more than $30 worth of yen. And for the record, with $30, you would be unable to buy even one R2 DVD. Try about $75-$90.

Nice to a show with some substance (Bakemonogatari) claim the record than a show that is thoroughly lacking (K-ON!), though I think that the release of the former's volume, revolving around a moe-ish character, might be the true reason for its success, like the latter.

I love K-ON!
Naturally the production quality and level of awesome of Bakemonogatari is on a different scale, but you can't really compare them. K-ON! accomplishes all it sets out to do, and it'd be pretty silly to deny all the moe and fanservice present in Bakemonogatari too (Hanekawa <3) even though the show has more "substance". One title clearly benefits from the Blu-Ray format more than the other though, it's pretty clear which one that is.
And anyway. K-On has already proved it's popularity, it's not really "humbling" it by any means. Several volumes of singles, band albums (of which I am a patron of as well) DVD, and Blu-Ray discs later it still remains uber popular. Bakemonogatari is amazing too; most fans (of both shows) have already hoarded K-On releases and this is new, so naturally it will do well.
