Sweet!

Anybody else in Kyoto gonna go see this? I have the Phoenix DVD box set in my backpack at the moment, purchased on my month long trip back to America over the summer. I'm going to marathon the thing for the rest of the day, then head over to the museum tomorrow and check it out. I'm sure it presents a good photo opportunity.

I've been to the museum before, and they usually have somebody there that does hand-drawn caricatures. I didn't have that done last time, so I might as well get one of those too.

It looks cheap, like made out of foam.

Looks gorgeous.

I would sure love to see it in person (along with the Odaiba Gundam and the Astro Boy sculptures as well)

I have similar feelings. I for some reason was hoping for an actual sculpture out of stone, or something metal worked, that can stand on it's own. Something more... permanent I suppose. No idea why I was thinking this. Still... it's nice, looks exactly like the original, but it does look like plastic.

A Phoenix standing? No way. A Phoenix in flight (as it is portrayed in the work) is definitely the most majestic pose, and is the most memorable from Tezuka's manga.

Also, how is a wooden sculpture not an "actual sculpture"?

I was unaware that there were exclusivity rules regarding the medium used for sculptures.

Pick and choose my words out of context if you want, it wasn't my intention to imply it not being made out of stone or metal made it any less of a sculpture. I just prefer my sculptures of a more traditional medium, but I did miss that it was made out of wood. Looking at it now with the knowledge that it was made of wood makes me even more sad the wood grain was painted over. Painting sculptures just seems cheap to me. Sort of like you're cheating and covering up what it was underneath. It's a personal preference, nothing wrong about it. I said it was nice, but it looks like a giant toy.

It's the effort and guts to go beyond the public expectation that will make an artist's work to be bold.

For example, if I were plan to sculpt a 11m tall Ozamu Tezuka's Phoenix in flight. I will have the Phoenix supported in midair against a trail of flame soaring up from the base of the sculpture itself. Not against a plain blue background nailed onto the wall, which itself is 11m off the ground. Neutral

Hmm, I wonder if the structure was made to be fireproof Laughing ...

Regardless, this is pretty cool, I guess.

Since MBS no longer streams its video report, this article has been updated to include links to photographs.

Egan: You're awesome.

Since it is clearly an indoor sculpture I don't think it looks all that cheap. I bet it looks better at night with artificial lighting. The pose is very similar to the R1 (with the exception of the turned head) artwork in fact.

Also, since it is hanging on a second story with hundreds of people walking under it everyday, it doesn't surprise me they didn't make it out of stone. Wink
