I've been combing through the ANN encyclopedia reading up on shows I've never heard of when I came across this gem:

Quote:
Ginban Kaleidoscope: 16-year old Sakurano Tazusa is a Japanese figure ice-skater who considers herself to be worth $10 billion in beauty. While executing her moves in the Women's Figure Skating Grand Prix, she stumbled and landed badly, hence resulting in her loss in the competition. At the same time, in the same city, a Canadian youth by the name of Pete Pumps was performing an air stunt when his plane crashes and he dies. Tazusa starts to hear a strange voices and realises that the Canadian ghost now resides in her body. After futile attempts to get rid of Pete, Tazusa decides to get accustomed to his presence and in the meantime, improve on her techniques in order to get selected for the Olympics.

Where to start? An ice-skater who considers herself to be "worth $10-billion in beauty"? I love her already. Modest much? And competing in the "Grand Prix" of figure skating, no less. Impressive. But here's my favourite part: a Canadian stunt pilot named Pete Pumps - there's a good old Canookian name for you, eh? So the ghost of a Canadian stunt pilot named Pete Pumps enters the body of a narcissistic Japanese figure skater...hey, why not? This one just seems too hilarious not to check out.

So what gets your vote as the most bizarre / unlikely / funny anime premise?

Pete... Pumps?

Are you sure it's not in the AV category? Confused

Well, most anime (from an outsider's perspective) would have bizarre ideas, but seriously, I don't remember anything of the "so bad it's good" variety.

Giant robots, sponsored by Nike that play basket ball where living on the moon makes your breasts bigger. 'Nuff said.

The thing that I watched that I found the most bizarre is movie by name of Laws of Eternity. It's basically like a scientology brochure in anime form where 4 college students in the science club visit a history museum and read about plans by Benjamin Franklin for the invention of a "spirit phone". They are then randomly stopped a strange old shaman woman who channels his ghost and the main characters receives the knowledge to build the device, which they then proceed to do. He and his friends then go on a wacky and strange tour of heaven, meeting all kinds of dead celebrities from around the world. It's litterally so awful that it's unintentionally hilarious.

Kyoran Kazoku Nikki: A cat-girl who claims to be a god, a talking lion, a bio-weapon resembling Predator, a floating electric jellyfish, a flamboyant cross-dressing gay man, an adorable little girl, and an officer for the supernatural department of law enforcement are ordered to be a family by the government of Japan in order to prevent the destruction of the world. And then it gets progressively weirder.

Shocked

Makes me wonder, who comes up with this stuff?

I mean its obvious when someone cranks out a love comedy or a mystery like Death Note who they want their audience to be.

This is, just beyond weird.

I didn't think anybody would be able to top Kruszer's Law of Eternity...I was wrong. Is it common practice for anime creators to break out the LSD before coming up with their ideas?

Not quite as bizzare as that one, but I still think Akikan is just odd. What with cans transforming into beautiful girls, which if I recall correctly were kept alive by infusing them with Carbon Dioxide via kissing...

I'll nominate Toshokan Sensou which, as a Noitamina show, wants viewers to take seriously a future Japan where armed librarians defend books and the right to read against militarized censors. Good thing it has strong characters and a nice romance.

Beyond the unlikely premise, what made this show especially puzzling was that both sides of this conflict seemed established by the government despite the risks the battles posed to civilians.

Law of Ueki is one of the most bizarre for me? What kind of power is turning trash into trees supposed to be?

A surprisingly strong one, actually. Although the initial premise sounds odd, The Law of Ueki is actually a fairly straightforward shounen series. I'm very fond of it, and the manga that it is based on.

I would have to say Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro has a unique premise. How often do you hear of a demon from hell who eats riddles? Oddly enough, for myself, it is often the unusual anime that I enjoy most.

Those are some good crazy ones, I can't think of something to top it, but I will throw in Hayate no Gotoku.
Quote:
Abandoned by his parents and given a monumentally large debt as a Christmas present, 16-year old Ayasaki Hayate is at the lowest point of his life. Desperately trying alter his hapless fate, he decides to kidnap someone to hold for a ransom. Due to an ill choice of words, the girl he tries to kidnap misunderstands the action as a confession of love. His plan is totally crushed when he gives his real name out. Realizing his wrongdoing, Hayate proceeds to rescue the girl from the yakuza, who had instead kidnapped her. The girl, as a token of thanks, offers Hayate a job as her butler. Hayate, overwhelmed by her kindness, vows to protect her even at the cost of his life.

Well, I'll take your word for it, abunai. I read some of the manga but never really got into it. I might someday.

Here's a productive suggestion:

1. Reduce the number of posts that you make by 3/4.

2. Expand the posts that you do write to a sensible length. Go nuts, and write more than just a few sentences every time. Maybe even two-three paragraphs. Imagine all the information you'd be able to pack into two whole paragraphs.

3, Use any spare time left over after subtracting the time losses in Step 2 from the time gains in Step 1 to watch some more anime, so that you have something to write about.

4. Profit. Well, at least in the sense of not annoying everybody with short, pointless posts.
