Sadly this is all the beloved OVA moniker gets anymore, silly addendums to shows in order to make more money off the show's fanbase. It might have as well been part of the TV broadcast, because the animation and art aren't any better, and it maybe only runs another 3 minutes longer than the normal length of an episode.

As for actual real OVAs, what do we have left? Hellsing Ultimate? MS IGLOO just finished. Real shame, since I can't think of a better form of anime.

I wouldn't say this is the only type of OVA we get. Recently there's been Murder Princess, Mnemosyne, and Strait Jacket. The 3rd MariMite season was an OVA series, and there was a 3 episode Genshiken OVA series sandwiched between the two seasons.

Still, I'm not saying you're wrong. If you look back at the 90s, for instance, OVAs seemed to be a lot more prevalent and a good way to generate buzz for a potential TV series. We saw properties such as Tenchi and El Hazard start out as OVA series, and Pioneer brought over quite a few of those types of titles for our enjoyment.

Even back then, though, they would do this same thing with having an OVA episode be episode 14 of a TV series. Dual Parallel Trouble Adventures was one such title.

GA is a lot of fun though, having watched 2 episodes and read the first volume of the manga, so I like any excuse to get more of it. Kind of the art school version of AzuDai.

Considering that the 13-episode-or-so late-night shows are essentially the modern equivalent of the longer-form 6-to-13 episode OVA series from the late-80's through mid-90's, it's pretty natural that the late-night anime shows would return to their OVA roots for sequels.

The only thing that annoys me about that trend is that, once a late-night TV anime series switches to OVA's, it's unlikely to return to the airwaves for a full 12-or-13-episode season, especially for the moé slice-of-life shows I adore like Ichigo Mashimaro.

I think you'd like GA in that case.

Yeah, I'd definitely love to see more Ichigo Mashimaro, besides just the OVAs. Moe stuff tends to be hit or miss for me, but that one was a critical hit.

I watched the first episode of GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class a couple of weeks back, but haven't gotten around to watching the rest of what's aired so far yet.

It was fun and surprisingly educational, but the characters didn't seem too well-defined compared to even other shows within the moé SOL genre like K-On!

The top two shows I'm watching this season are Sora no Manimani and Taisho Baseball Girls.
