Did this really air at 8 pm? I thought it was one of the typical after-midnight shows that make up most of anime nowadays, even the non-pervy ones.

Nope. It really does air then. This fact was specifically mentioned when ANN's staff did reviews on the upcoming anime for '09. Anime dazed This has to be one of - if not the - most disturbing "none-porn" franchises I've seen come outta Japan.

I tried to find even one little thing redeemable about this series, but aside from the artstyle itself, it's just... just... *shudders*

A solid review. The nipple problems were outlined quite tastefully, but to expect a more realistic depiction of such features would be going above and beyond the call of duty on Megahouse's part. One must question whether realism is to be strived for considering the source material, whose appeal solely revolves around a certain... type of fantasy.

I've never seen Queens Blade, nor do I ever intend to, but oh man, how I want this figure. She is so freakin' cute.
And c'mon, Rob, what's wrong with some plastic nipples? As long as they're not a replacement for real nipples, I say there's no harm done.
This might warrant my breaking my rule (again) to not buy figures for series that I haven't seen.

You mean aside from making anime character figures that feature soft, squeezable breasts with cleavages, that sort of realism? Rolling Eyes

Nice review, and nice pictures. Nanael seems to be the only character in this series that I actually find attractive. Anyway, it looks like a genuinely good figure, aside from, perhaps, the nudity. Though I can no more condone strip clubs than I can plastic nipples on toys.

I had to laugh at this.

Why do dangling participles hurt so much? I now have to fight the urge to zip over to the original article and edit away this common mistake.

Agreed, though ironically I found the artstyle as presented in episode one of the anime (which is as much of the anime as I could make myself watch) rather unflattering, especially when compared to the pretty character pictures displayed on the (horribly coded) official site.

Or considering the simple fact that it's an anime figure, and that anime, with its large eyes etc, doesn't exactly strive for realism in its designs in the first place.

The AT-X version, yes. The uncensored AT-X broadcast had the age-restricted-viewing flag set so it would be blocked by satellite boxes not set to allow it (i.e. parental controls). AT-X (Anime Theater X) is a premium satellite channel (2000 yen/month) so the comparison to Cinemax is apt.

AT-X aired it at 8AM & 8PM on Saturdays, 2PM on Monday, and 2AM Monday night (Tuesday morning).

Non-premium (regular over-the-air) stations aired the censored version in typical late-night slots.

Ah, okay, that makes a whole lot more sense. The Japanese are more lenient about what gets on TV than Americans, but I didn't think they were that permissive. But if it's a cable channel, then you can pretty much show whatever you want whenever (think of HBO and Showtime).

The quality of that sculpt almost makes me want try watching the show... until I remember the promo art with the pinhead bimbo whose melons were literally bigger than her noggin. Honestly, though, that's one fine-lookin' figure!

Pretty humorous, but I wish there was more about the actual figure rather than just trying to separate yourself from the content of the show. Okay, so you can remove the clothes and the show is saucy. Let's move on from that point, kinda felt like I was reading a lot of the same thing this episode.

It looked like a really nice figure, I wish I could have gotten some of your critical views on the flaws of the actual figure rather than that of the source material.

Well I can't help but to wonder what's preventing them to have the same kind of quality and dedication towards more significant works, as in realism on an anime figure based on a rather questionable source material. Confused They've got the skill and the will, so why wasting them on soft-porn?

My general impression is that Astro Toy is the SomethingAwful.com of figure reviews, like a "Weird and Wacky World of Otaku Figures" kind of thing. So part of the humor here is that he's so taken aback by Queen's Blade and figures with nipples that he's unable to review the figure seriously. Looking at Astro Toy discussion threads, it's common to see posts like "I don't buy figures but I love your column! It's so funny!" I imagine that's the main audience (or at least became the main audience over time, even if that wasn't the original plan).

So yes, Queen's Blade — which features more bare breasts than most actual hentai used to — is incredibly popular. It's exactly like if Cinemax After Dark aired at 8pm on Fridays — everyone would watch to see boobies. Hell, I'd watch just to see them put breasts on Friday night after dinner. It's insane. And man, if you don't think the whole Queen's Blade phenomenon isn't a result of the anime industry going down the toilet, and being so desperate for cash they've just resorted to airing soft-core in primetime — then… then you're wrong. The fact that it's working doesn't change this a bit.

Yeah, anime sucks nowadays.

No, just most of the really successful stuff. Do something artsy and intelligent, and you won't sell any DVDs or figurines. And whose fault is that...? (glares at the average anime fan)

In what way does that weapon fit the definition of a saber?
