There's part of a discussion between Takashi Murakami (the superflat guy) and Mamoru Hosoda here from Yomiuri's website.
It calls the movie "Dai kazoku animation eiga" (approx. Great (important) Family Animation Movie), as the family in the movie must bond together to stand up to world crisis. I saw the trailer back when I went to Eva 2.0, and instantly recognized Hosoda's style. The animation style looks very similar to The Girl Who Conquered Time, but after all, the studio, director, and character designer are all the same, so that's not surprising. I'll skim through the rest of the conversation to try to find some stuff. Hosoda says that he likes people who are most like the main characters to watch his films. For "Tokikake Shojo," this was high school students. This time it's families and relatives. Murakami says that the audience for anime movies is usually otaku, and this results in obsession with certain things. It's very different from the audience for art, he says. |
