Definitely Viz Media gets a hands up when it comes to uncensored/uncut and a dub that matches to the Japanese original.
The Dic/Cloverway dub was infamous not only because it was voice-acted not good, it had a lot of censorship and alteration (given that this happened before streaming and DVDs/Blu-ray existed, that's understandable but the dub hasn't aged well) like for example, the Sailor Neptune/Uranus "cousin" thing which does not make their portrayal of same-sex relationship much worse by turning it into a incest. There were episodes that DiC never dubbed like for example, I believe 1 or 2 episodes on R/season 2 never got dubbed in English the first time, and yeah, you get the idea. I'm thankful the Viz Media fix all that, and was able to dub the undub episode that DiC never touched on. I understand the nostalgia for the old Dic/Cloverway dub, but looking back the voice-acting was not good, the censorship/alteration would be unacceptable by today's standard, and also the old dub hasn't aged well hence why Viz Media dub was needed. |
