It's not really that much different from them going from Japanese to Korean in the Korean film, to be honest. Of course, whether the Hollywood version will be good or not... well, I'm certainly doubtful.

This is the dumbest post I've ever read. It's not about the nationality of the character. Get over your yellow fever. It's about how engaging the story is. How good at the role Smith is, and how visceral they get with the story. What made Park's version such a hit with western audiences was how vengeful the story was. How it felt like he was running on instinct. The pacing was right, the violence was right, the character interactions were right, the shots were dynamic, etc. Park knows how to tell revenge stories well. Sympathy for Mr Vengeance was an outstanding example of a revenge story, and Old Boy is just as good in my opinion.
I'm eager to see if Spielberg can make this movie right, and let it only have one ending. I'm glad both he and Smith are trying to tackle something new. I'm hoping they can manage to keep it just as raw, and just as vengeful. It's a feeling that, if removed or ignored, will not work with the story of Old Boy. I'm not expecting much though. I don't see Spielberg doing a revenge story well. Minority Report is great example of a movie that could have had a great "DAMN!" ending, but instead went for the "Yay! We got the bad guy. America is safe again!" ending. I hope he proves me wrong...

I hope they really do stick to the story, I loved the Old Boy manga. The Korean movie was terrible and tried to throw in a bunch of terrible plot points to "spice" it up, when it really didn't need any. If they stick to the story I really think Smith and Spielberg can make an amazing adaption of the manga.

Yeah, octopus is as common a dish in America as it is in Asia.

And the story is being handled by a guy who's never seen a dark movie which he couldn't turn into a happy ending. But seriously, a Hollywood version of Oldboy won't "get" what made the original worked anymore than "The Departed" understood the appeal of "Infernal Affairs". I swear, I think The Ring and Star Wars Episode IV are the only white-washed remakes of Asian films I can stand; and that's only because the directors didn't try to change or fluff up the material which made the original concepts work in the first place.
