Not good. I remember Joost was hailed as revolutionary when it was first announced. They are one of only a couple of online companies who supply the ANN Video library with regionally unrestricted videos. As such I hope that if they do not plan to supply further anime-related content, other companies will be willing to do so in their stead.

Poor Joost. It seems like it really sucks to be the worse than all of your legitimate competitors.

Now, if this were to happen to Hulu.com, I'd be surprised. Of course, it's unlikely that Hulu would fail this hard, since they're doing things the right way.

Several Joost streams suffered from quality control issues, such as garbled video and truncated or missing episodes;

I don't know anything about that, but my problem with Joost is that its video quality is a bit worse than Hulu's 480p stream. Most content that's on Joost is also on Hulu, so why would I want to watch it in a bit lower quality on Joost?

(actually I thought Joost's video quality was much lower than it really is until I started writing this post; I just checked it out and it's only slightly worse than Hulu's -- I was originally going to criticize it more in this post but now I can't).

The lack of marketing from Joost, compared to Hulu with its TV ads, probably hurt, too.

Yeah, the problem for sites like Joost when competing with Hulu is that three major U.S. broadcasting networks are backing Hulu: NBC, Fox, and recently ABC joined as well. They have the "traditional" U.S. TV market in their corner. Gotta be hard to compete with.

Glad to see Joost is still around in some though.

Well, they gave it the ol' college try. Hardly surprising considering Hulu's burgeoning popularity. Too bad, though, because I kept waiting for them to establish a more unique identity and start offering something that Hulu couldn't.

They did. The difference didn't exist through any variation in content but through restriction of access, or moreover the lack thereof. The winner of the two is, alas, the company that appealed to the big companies by focusing exclusively on their markets.
