Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. I remember meeting Eisner and having a brief chat with him in Copenhagen, in 1986. He was polite to and considerate of all his thronging fans, even though there was quite a crowd. As he signed my copy of "A Contract with God" with a flourish and a joke, one would never have known that there were dozens of people around him - it felt as if I was quite alone with him. Along with meeting Carl Barks, this memory is one of those I put away in a special area of my mind, marked "keepers". - abunai |

This is a great loss. Eisner was one of those rare cartoonists who couldn't write or draw anything without evolving the medium in some way. Everything he did had its own vibe, its own unique kind of genius, that felt different from any of his other works but at the same time felt like only he could have made it. That's a rare and wonderful quality in an artist. The man was one of a kind.
This is probably the comic world's biggest loss since Tezuka died. I think I'm gonna go re-read my Spirit hardcover now. |

Very sad news indeed, especially since it was only days before that people were wishing him well after a successful surgery, and he was expected to make a full recovery.

I'm not too familiar Eisner's works besides the Spirit, (Jack "King" Kirby was the go-to guy helped to lay the groundwork within the comics scene, Butch Lukic of Batman Beyond is heavly influenced by Kirby as you can tell by watching the series.) but i do remember him being the most influentual comic artist of all time. In other words; if not for Eisner there would not be a Kirby,Steranko,Lee,Zeck,Golden,Miller,etc.

This is really sad news. Eisner was a pioneer in every possible way. His early work on the Spirit was amazing, as well his later graphic novels. His contributions to American graphic fiction will forever be remembered. Hopefully Darkhorse will do something really special with the Eisner/Miller TPB (which he worked on with Frank Miller).

Oh my god.
I guess I wasn't really expecting him to last too much longer, since he was so old, but this is still really shocking and depressing. Time to reread A Contract With God again tonight. |

I have never read any of his work, but as a comic fan it would be sacrilige to not be sorrowful with his passing. I only hope that compaies do not decide to jack up the prices on his work so I can become familiar with it. RIP.
