Well, that'll get them to put up better security on their server so it doesn't happen again. But what's the worst that can happen here? Sounds like when a store sells a DVD a day before they're supposed to, which apparently the MPAA finds a huge problem with, but it doesn't matter to anyone in the long run, it's just legal nonsense in some 150 page contract with 8 point font.

What's the betting some so called "fans" will still find something about it to whine about it even though they've got it before Japan!

I'm not too sure the otaku torrenting things will be going after One Piece. Anyway, I saw the title of the file of in question, and it looks like it said 360p, which a pretty small resolution, so quality will suffer.

I downloaded... it's pretty good quality. Probably better than TV-quality.

Ouch. I imagine Toei being pretty ticked-off at Funimation for a screw up like this. Hope it doesn't hurt their relationship.

Can you imagine if Lost or 24 was broadcast online before it officially aired? This is a HUGE disaster for Funi!
I hope it doesnt cause them to lose One Piece!

It's not Toei that cares so much as Fuji TV, which has initial broadcast rights. But of course a problem for Fuji is a problem for Toei.

A mention that it contains the Toei Animation watermark should probably be added into the main post.

American shows have leaked out before and it wasn't that huge of a deal. This isn't really that unheard of.
And considering the primary demographic for One Piece is not-P2P savvy 8-16 yr old males, this really isn't as big as deal as it seems.

For a televised broadcast perhaps. But Funi is probably aiming at a little older demographic for online streaming (beer ads typically air before the OP eps start streaming). One that is tech-savvy.

Ignoring file size, the picture quality of Funi streams is good. But it's most definitely not better than TV. At just 640x360 you've lost a heck of a lot of detail.
Anyways, on a practical level I don't think Japan has anything to worry about. I doubt it will affect viewer ratings since I can't imagine Japanese viewers opting for this comparatively inferior version.
As far as targeted demographics of Funi online viewers, I'm not sure if you can judge by the ads. They seem to be all over the place as far as ad content and type goes.

Not like Japan hasn't had its share of leakage, like all that business with Code Geass episodes...

Yeah, it's a pretty shitty copy. FLV, frame drops, major blocking issues. The usual fail associated with streaming video. Still, all in all it was a good episode. : )
