I was doing a little research on Moomin, my new avatar, and discovered the World Masterpiece Theater. I have never heard of it before although I can recognize some of the titles which are listed. I have a few questions about it since it has perked my interest.
Are only titles delivered by Nippon Studios considered WMT even if others clearly fit in with it? What defines WMT titles to being with? Are there actually titles not listed in the WMT that could or should be? This might be a shallow question but are WMT titles good? I've heard Anne of Green Gables is excellent and I believe it but I can't imagine the Swiss Family Robinson as anime Confused . Is it worth going out of my way to watch some of these titles and acquire a knowledge of WMT anime, or is the title redundant and the anime not worth it?

I'm really interested in some, especially Andersen Stories and The Bush Baby, but I get the feeling that they're not famous for a reason.

World Masterpiece Theater is a collection of anime that are based on classic novel/stories from all different countries around the world. That why you recognize some of the titles seeing as how there famous tales that most kids would know.

I've only seen one episode of Les Misérables and was instantly turn off because it's was a moe show. And for a novel that's so good, I don't really have any plans on letting that bad taste in my mind.

I feel the need to point out the Daiso that just opened up hear me sells Moomin Tissue packets from Japan- 6 for $1.50. (You can get 8 Detective Conan for the same price, but they're smaller.)

They used to show WMT titles in the Philippines back when I was a kid. Some of the ones I remember are Heidi, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Swiss Family Robinson, Princess Sarah (My favorite back in first grade!), Adventures of Peter Pan (My favorite back in kindergarten), Trapp Family, and Remi - nobody's girl.

I thought these were really good back then (I didn't even want to go to school since they would air these series during early mornings), but I still think Remi is good, since I re-watched it last year. Then for Heidi, I was surprised to find out my mom actually watched the whole thing last year. She said it was really good and "addictive"

Geh, Les Misérables is ruining the whole franchise (AND Victor Hugo's masterpiece novel). I tried to watch some of it too, and was similarly turned off. You really have to watch some of the more classic titles to get a real sense of the greatness of WMT.

Yes. Even though stuff like Princess Arete, Gankutsuou and Grimm Masterpiece Theater (which also happens to be Nippon Animation) are also adaptations of literature, only the titles listed on that page are officially part of WMT.

Quote:

Well, it has to be produced by Nippon Animation, first of all. I imagine series are planned out by the studio beforehand to add to the WMT collection, rather than adding random anime titles that happen to adapt literature to the list afterward.

Quote:

No. That's the full list.

Quote:

Like any omnibus, it's a mixed bag. I think the new Les Misérables is terrible, but titles like Heidi and Anne of Green Gables are great. I would start out by trying to find the series that Ghibli folk like Isao Takahata were involved with; those titles are generally the most highly regarded. I've heard great things about A Dog of Flanders and 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother. Daddy Long Legs is quite good, too, though. And I'm pining to see A Little Princess Sara, myself.

Redundant, no. Each series has its own look and feel; Daddy Long Legs feels nothing at all like Anne of Green Gables (although Isao Takahata's series tend to share a similar visual style). If you're asking if you should watch these just because they say "World Masterpiece Theater," then of course I'd say no. Watch titles that you think will interest you personally, not just because there's some label on it. That said, many of the WMT titles are well worth your time.

The only one I've ever seen all the way through is Little Women.

I've never read the novel or whatever, but I really liked this; it was quite nice.

I've also seen Princess Sara, and I really liked that, but for whatever reason, I never watched it religiously (but I'll tell you that it really kicked ass and that the headmaster lady was a real bitch).

But yeah... overall, I'm under the impression that this is generally really good stuff; just... wish that I paid more attention when I actually had the opprotunity to see all this; I really regret it now.

Yeah that lady was sort of a gold digger, wasn't she? And that blonde girl who was mean to Sarah the whole time. I hate those two..

I think Princess Sarah was the first and only anime that made me start an anime club (but I didn't know it was anime then). It was just me and a couple of classmates and we would meet during school breaks to talk about what happened in each episode.. Laughing

Yeah, what's her face... the blondie... she was really conceited.

Yeah... I saw it when I was still living in the Philippines, actually.

I think ABS-CBN had like the sequel or something too (which I didn't watch as well... wait, was there a sequel? In fact, I think there was a sequel to Little Women too... the World Masterpiece Theatre one, I mean).

...

Man, I really wish that I took advantage of that... I really regret not wacthing those shows now.

Ah so you're Filipino too? Girls my age know all about this anime.. I think her name was Lavinia or something like that, at least for the tagalog translation..

I'm not sure if there's a sequel, but there was a Filipino - made live action movie. They did the same thing with Cedie, which was just as popular..

Oh yeah, I remember the live-action movie too... when I was a kid, I thought that it was pretty cool (not sure if I'll think it now though... but who knows?)

All things considering though:

spoiler[I kind of prefer the fact that, in the live-action version, the blondie character *who wasn' t actually blond in the live-action movie* and the bitchy head mistress person felt a lot more sorry about what they did in the end than they did in the anime.]

Yeah... that was pretty satisfying, from what I recall.

But in both the anime and live-action,spoiler[ blondie apologized to Sarah]. However, the headmistress was nicer in the Filipino version.

I saw Moomin when I was a kid, also I've been meaning to check out Romeo's Blue Skies, those are the two that really interest me, but if there are any others that seem well reviewed or interest me personally I'll check them out. Have any of them ever been available on DVD in the original language with subs? I keep looking for Moomin, but all I can find is the German stop-motion one (though I think that looks interesting too).

i love the WMT series. the old ones are good, but i'd have to agree that it has changed too much since Miyazaki left (Les Miserables looks like any other anime but WMT). too bad there are no subbed ones around (English). i bought the summarized movie of Little Lord Fauntleroy even if i can't really understand Japanese lol.

I watched almost all of the WMT titles during my childhood. Some of them were good like Princess Sara, Ochame na Futago, Daddy long legs, Heidi and Moomin and some I didn't care for like The Trapp Family (a poor adaption of the Sound of Music IMO) and Ai Shoujo Pollyanna (Too dragged-out)

This was actually one of the more enjoyable WMT titles, it centers around a very likeable female character who's the daughter of Dr. Robinson. I would rather if they subtitled this one than Remi that I didn't really care for.

Anderson Stories is another one I didn't care for -this anime is made up of stand alone episodes that center around a fairy tale at a time and The Bush Baby was pretty good at the begining and had a lot of potential for better things to come, but it kinda went downhill during the second half -the plot twist was lame and it looked like the writers wanted an excuse for a tour around the safari.

It's not German - it's Polish. I've seen a few animated versions of the Moomins but you can't beat the original novels and comic strips by Tove Jansson.
