For shame. Hacking to buy DLCs? Don't his parents have PayPal?

These Police stories are getting more and more crazy.

Honestly is Japan so safe that this is what the police do with their time?

Are they overstaffed?

It's sorta okay that the Police would get involved in this if it involves fraud of bank details etc but for it to become public knowledge as well seems madness to me. Are their press outside this kids house as he's taken away or something lol

Yes. Most of the crimes seem to have to do with computers. Very rarely do you hear cases of rape, knife attacks, gun shots, etc. On the streets, it's very safe.

We're only hearing about these because they're man bites dog to us. Regardless of Japan's actual violent offense rate, we wouldn't hear about most of them, at least not here.

Back on to the actual topic, this is fraud and theft. You can argue that arresting him might be over the top, but that it was via a game doesn't change nothing.

They do have crime over there - usually a lot of missing people (there's generally a new case highlighted every morning around 10a on TV) or lots of people with gambling addictions and the things they do in order to get cash to fuel that.

I'd love to see what the Japanese version of the TV show "COPS" would be like. Would they focus on the poor koban building in some prefecture and talk to a cop whose daily work included someone turning in a wallet to him, or would they focus on a cybercrime officer like the ones featured in this story whose mission it is to deter fraud in the online gaming world?

Exciting stuff.

Pretty much. Very low crime rate. Last I read most of the crimes were white-collar stuff due to the very low violent crime rate.
