Dunno about you guys... but I was pretty disappointed.
The music sounded like every other cheesy female R&B single. Yknow.... the cool thing about Utada was that she was sort of original with her style of music and it was kinda cool. I'm sad that she would be willing to let Def Jam write her music for her, just to get some albums out in the US.... Lame.... |

I know its free and all, but damn put some effort into it.
Even low end encode/fansub groups release better quality vids than this crap. @asgiov: Yea same old played out stuff, or maybe we all just expected too much since it is her work. |

I know how you feel. All her English music just lacks the great feel her Japanese music has for some reason. Alot of people think it's because she doesn't write the English music but that's not true. It could just be because of the other people involved outside of the writing but I don't know. Exodus didn't live up to her Japanese releases and by the looks of it neither will this. It seems the only songs she has done in English that turned out really good were Simple and Clean for Kingdom Hearts and Sanctuary for Kingdom Hearts 2 but those songs sound nearly identical to the Japanese versions and that is a really good thing. |

it seems like whenever japanese artists specifically target an english-speaking audience, the results turn out bland (this new song) or absolute crap (Golgo 13). i think the understanding we have between our two cultures is still pretty weak.

This is one of the weakest songs on the album. I'm hoping she'll make the next single FYI since it's much more her style.

What's interesting is that " This is the One" is #19 on itunes and #38 on amazon mp3 albums chart. One would hope this is good news.

I actually think she's doing it right with this second album. There're songs that are tailored made for the english-speaking market. Yet the "Utada-ness" is definitely there. FYI is definitely an Utada's song. "Come Back To Me" is very repetitive, but addictive. I can so see it being feature in some American TV shows........ maybe that's what she needs to get her hands on.
The first album, without looking at the cover, I wouldn't know I'm listening to the Utada Hikaru that I like. This second one, even thou I wasn't quite comfotable with Utada singing about sex and dirty desires in some of the songs, but it is definitely Utada! Show some support people! |

I agree with you. This is the one is definitely a stronger album than exodous and I too hope FYI is the next single, along with This one (crying like a child), they're her strongest songs on her new cd and totally indicative of her style and what she's capable of. I can understand what everyone is saying about it being different from her Japanese stuff, but you guys shouldn't write off her album so soon. I too was kind of disapointed when I heard Come Back to Me for the first time. I feared a repeat of exodous, luckily after hearing samples from the rest of the album it was clear Come Back to Me was only a taste of what she really had to offer this time around. Anyway regardless of whether or not Come Back to Me is par with your taste, it's making quite an impact with the mainstream and it's been getting decent air time on radio stations in almost every state. |

Yeah... Dirty Desire, Dirty Desire. I was a bit unsure at first but I like the song. I'm just glad things turned out better then with Exodus.

Not really. I'm slowly being able to understand things due to my japanese lessons and the songs are still as good when I begin to understand them.

hmm... I guess she may have written the lyrics, which is pretty common. But I'm pretty sure I've heard that same beat in the song used in a dozen OTHER Def Jam songs...
Pretty sure the actual music and meolody is just recycled stuff.... It's almost like a cover version of some Brittany (Moesha) song or something.... or one of those other un-original R&B artist. |

Hikki not only writes the lyrics but she also has great control over the musical score. She's a musician in all aspects, so no part of the creative process is anything that was done for her. Unlike with Exodus where it was apparent Timbaland was doing a lot of the beat mixes, Hikki chose who she wanted to work with and was adamant about the sound she wanted to produce. |
